Last year we lost $5 million dollars in funding for this year and next year.
These funds were to be used to repair and maintain the parks buildings and equipment.
So far we have managed to postpone or delay major projects until we again will receive these funds.
The state budget for next year, House Bill 433, was passed last week by the Alabama House of Representatives. In this bill two million dollars of the tobacco tax that we have been receiving is being sent to the general fund. This is almost all the funds that we receive, other than visitor fees. This loss of funds will cause Alabama State Parks to close or partially close some facilities. We cannot absorb this loss of funding and maintain the same level of current operations. We hope that this transfer of funds will not be included in the final budget that is passed by the Senate.
I ask all of you to contact your local legislators and ask them not to cut the Parks Division's tobacco tax funds.

Thank you so much to everyone who's signing and sharing this petition with friends and family! I have high hopes that we can convince the Alabama Senate that diverting vital funds from our state parks would be a horrible mistake and that we Alabamians would be very upset to suffer the misfortune of losing something so dear to so many of us!

We've only gotten a few signatures in the last couple of days...please help to spread word by posting this petition to your facebook page, emailing it to friends, and sharing it on your blog. We need as many signatures as possible if we're going to convince the Alabama Senate that the people of Alabama won't stand for the redistribution of vital state funds from Alabama's State Parks!

    5. CLOSING STATE PARKS INCURS UNKNOWN COSTS!

      Heather Whitmore
      Petition Organizer

Closing our state parks would not only eliminate the monies brought in by tourism, loss of jobs, and loss of our beautiful and treasured greenspaces, but would also incur the unknown costs of storing many items! Closing our state parks would be a huge mistake and would result in losses that would reach far beyond that which is most obvious! We should learn from what others have already done...we must not make the same mistakes already made by others!

This is our second year visiting Monte Sano State Park, hope to revisit many more times. it's a great place to spend a vacation I hope you will consider it's a jewel of a place. Once it's run down it will take more to rehab than to maintain.

I am signing this petition because I sincerely believe that Alabama really is "The Beautiful." With proper advertisment, tourism in Alabama could easily be as much of an economic resource as it is in Tennessee or Florida. We need to be spending more on our state parks...not less!!! And I am a smoker....If I have to pay almost $5.00 a pack for smokes, can I not at least determine where that money is spent???

i am an active user of state parks and an educator in conservation biology. Parks are the greatest opportunity for the public to become enthusiastic about the natural world as they can experience a multitude of ecosystems in one visit. Without the availability of staff and educational tools to aid in discovery, much of the significance of these systems to the public will be unknown, their enthusiasm will diminish, and a desire to support the conservation of natural systems will be lost. We need the general public to support these systems to provide a legacy to future generations.

These parks produce revenue for our state, as well as provide jobs for Alabamians. We need to protect these assets!
