Prohibit Health Providers from Recommending Ex-Gay Therapy to Youth

The American Psychological Association, American Psychiatric Association, American Counseling Association, National Association of Social Workers and almost 500,000 mental health professionals have "condemned" the practice and acknowledged the harmful impacts that ex-gay camps have on participants.

The California Legislature recently passed legislation banning mental health providers from engaging "in sexual orientation change efforts with a patient under eighteen years of age" and if such occurs, it is considered "unprofessional conduct" and they "shall subject the provider to discipline by the licensing entity."

New Jersey has similar legislation.

Join us in asking Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to continue to take action on issues affecting our LGBT youth, by prohibiting health and mental health providers from recommending ex-gay therapy to anyone under the age of eighteen.

I'm was horrified to learn that the religion that I was raised in (but am no longer a part of), uses ex-gay therapy, and in the past have even used violent and dangerous methods, such as genital electrocution therapy. I feel the need to speak out against this. I was lucky enough leave the religion before I became aware of my sexual orientation towards women. I hope I can help those who are not as lucky as I am might go through such a horrible process.

Gayness can't be "cured" no matter how many times you quote the bible. And if God was as excepting as people say he is, then he would love us as we are. And only God has the right to judge us.

Geing Gay is not a mental disease and does not need therapy. Instead of helping people accept the person they are, this therapy does great damage to some one's self worth.

It is irresponsible to change someone from whom they are supposed to be.

This is important because I am a survivor of religious bigotry - still struggling. I never had to endure the so-called conversion therapies, but if I had, I don't know that I would be a survivor. This has no business being in a medical field proclaiming "do no harm"!!! This garbage therapy is meant to assuage the outsiders (family, friends, churches), not to help the individual being "treated"!

Start doing NO HARM & stop this HARMFUL abuse!!!
