Principal Kinch: Stop the elimination of the Choir Director, School Musical and Jazz Band!

The arts programs at Twality Middle School in Tigard are once again being threatened. Within the next 2 weeks the Choir Director will be removed and the Orchestra, Band and Drama teachers will be expected to teach choir if nothing is done. This is going to have a dramatic affect not only on the choir (students being taught by non-choir teachers) but also on all the other arts programs. Jazz band will be eliminated, drama and orchestra and band will have fewer classes to offer, and class sizes will increase once again. The yearly musical that is a highlight for all students and the community at large will also be eliminated. This decision is being made at the school level by the principal and is supported by Tigard-Tualatin School District administration.

This plan will not only hurt students at Twality, but will have far-reaching effects in the two high schools. For these programs to remain strong, they must be supported starting in elementary school and middle school to provide the underpinnings for students to excel in high school. If programs are eliminated, students are no longer given the opportunity to experience Jazz Band for instance, and will probably not elect to take it in high school thereby chipping away at the entire program.

Choir students being taught by non-choir certified teachers will not bring a complete complement of skills to the students thereby doing them and parents a disservice. Students will most likely loose interest and not elect to take choir in high school.

Finally, the arts programs at Twality are a source of pride for all of the students and are well known throughout the community. Twality has always been known as “the arts middle school” in the district. The musical, choir performing at the state capitol, and the jazz band and choir visiting all the elementary schools and senior centers will all come to an end. These are experiences our students will never get back.

Principal Carol Kinch must maintain Drama, Orchestra, Choir, and Band at Twality Middle School with teachers that specialize in these areas. We can all make a difference. Please sign this petition to stop the elimination of the Choir Director at Twality Middle School!

Please send this petition to everyone you know today. Urgent action is requested!

I am an art teacher. The arts teach children in ways no other 'subject' can. Keep excellent arts educators in your schools!

I was highly involved in music as a child and I think every child should have the same opportunity. Life without art is boring.

The discipline required for choral work helps students in other areas. The gestalt of choral singing propels the students to excellence, and excellence in one area helps encourage excellence in other areas. Music becomes the embodiment of math and of physics in a unique way. Please find other areas to tighten your funding.

      Thank you so much.

I am a supporter of music education. My mother used to teach orchestra in this distract, and it breaks my heart to see schools in Oregon cutting arts programs for kids. Research has shown over and over that students need arts education for a variety of reasons, and it is not reasonable to cut things like choir, jazz band and the musical.
