President Steve Scott: Raise awareness of sexual assault on PSU campus

I would like to raise sexual assault awareness to everyone on the Pittsburg State University campus. According to the campus advocate, Brooke Powell, Safehouse Crisis Center, "Students reaching out to an advocate has tripled". This has been within a two year span (2011-present). If we were to raise awareness and improve the quantity of education, this number would decline. A recent study in 2000 showed that 48.8% of college women who were victims of attacks that met the study’s definition of rape did not consider what happened to them rape.
I present this petition to President Steve Scott. I would like to petition for Freshman Experience and Transitions course staff members to have mandatory lectures on Sexual Assault Awareness. To educate students on what is considered sexual assault, signs of sexual assault, what to do if sexual assault has occurred, and the outcomes of its affects.

Sexual violence on campus must have an end, female students must be safe! Zero tolerance for sexual violence on campus! Sex offenders in universities and on the campus must be punished by law and excluded from the study and college!

Because its happening on College Campuses all over the nation and administrators are punishing the students who speak out or stand up to the assailant. Students of all ages need to be aware of not only their rights but how to protect themselves from the collateral damage if the institution fears publicity that it could happen on their campus.

I teach Family and Consumer Sciences at a small rural high school not far from PSU, many of my students have had bad experiences on the Pitt State campus when they go to college there. I see the results of PSU not having such a course.

This is an extremely important topic and I believe awareness is imperative to making change in our society. Both men and women can benefit greatly from understanding what sexual assault is by definition and what it looks like in the social setting. Only by having the conversations and raising awareness will we be able to change values, beliefs and behaviors within our culture. I believe a required course at all colleges/universities would be a tremendous opportunity for students and society as a whole! I am excited to hear about the work being done by this organization and the direction it is moving! They have my total support!
