From petition creator Kevin Malone: "According to Regretsy.com, after an interesting conversation with a Paypal executive, Paypal has issued an apology for the whole debacle. They have also unfrozen both the Regretsy.com account and April's personal account. They will allow her to have fee-free transactions until the end of the year (which is the only way she would use them at this point). Paypal also said in a statement released earlier in the day that they would "make a donation." She discussed this with them over the phone and they offered to donate to the charity of her choice. This was not the intention of the original donation and she suggested that they donate a $100 gift card for each of the 200 families. Paypal seems to be amenable to this idea. We will all have to watch for further updates to ensure that Paypal follows through with their promises. "

April Winchell and the folks at Regretsy.com have been trying to buy Christmas presents for kids. They took many applications, vetted them carefully and set about creating a giant gift exchange program, where you could buy a gift for the over 200 children.
They raised so much money that they found themselves in a position of not just being able to send toys, but to send a monetary gift to the families as well. They hoped it might help them make their holiday dinners more special, or maybe pay a pressing bill.
Apparently they made the mistake of using the “Donate” button, which Paypal is now claiming is only for nonprofit organizations to use. Paypal immediately froze the associated account and is demanding that each $2 donation be refunded individually.
Regretsy.com has been able to guarantee purchase and shipment of the toys, so that part is happening, as are the letters from Santa (most have already been delivered). However, at this point, they are not able to make a monetary gift to the families. Paypal has frozen everything that was not already spent or donated, while retaining all of the processing fees from the multiple transactions.

A full account of the entire ordeal can be found at: http://www.regretsy.com/2011/12/05/cats-1-kids-0/

We cannot allow Paypal to use a technicality to stand in the way of spreading goodwill during this holiday season.

Either way we have held a large corporation accountable. Great job!

According to a recent Regretsy.com post: "UPDATE: I just spoke with Paypal and had an encouraging conversation. They have apologized and made several concessions which are very much appreciated, and I will update you about that as soon as I pee." It appears that our petition and media blitz has been getting the attention of the folks at Paypal. I am waiting for the final resolution to be posted by Helen Killer before I declare this petition a VICTORY!

I've had issues with Paypal customer service in the past, and friends have had other issues with discriminating policies and related practices of theirs. This is just one more thing.

I have used Paypal exclusively for years for both my shop and personal purchases but will use them no longer if this isn't correctly handled by Paypal. There are other alternatives!

As a small business owner who accepts paypal, I am appalled. I'm also searching for other checkout options for my website.

Because I'm against PAYPAL and corporate greed. There have been many complaints about Paypal being very unfair to people and stealing their money blatantly. And they have horrible customer service!

This is an absolutely beautiful thing that April and Regretsy.com are doing, and PayPal just screwed them over! Boo PayPal! :(
