This is the second year that President Obama has waived the Congressional-mandated ban on military aid for countries that use child soldiers. He wants to provide Chad, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Yemen and South Sudan with over 200 million dollars of military aid during 2012. The Human Rights Watch has already criticized this decision by calling it a "a lack of leadership and disregard for U.S. law." These countries will not get serious about ending the use of child soldiers as long as we continue to support them; not to mention the fact that we could be putting that money to better use elsewhere.

Countries use child soldiers because their minds are so much more pliable and their needs more basic. They are cheap labour so to speak. How can we care more about children working in factories under deplorable conditions making clothing for Western consumers than children being forced to learn the trade of war. We are robbing generations of their childhoods and and creating situations where they know no other way of life. Mr Obama, please do not allow the US to be complicit in this travesty of injustice.

I don't want my country, the U.S.A., to talk about freedom and rights, then arm child soldiers and support regimes that use them!

Thus far I haven't seen President Obama do anything to show that he is worthy of the Nobel Peace Prize that was awarded to him far too early in his presidency. I have no idea what he was thinking when he authorized military aid to nations that use child soldiers or that commit other human rights abuses, or why we are giving out military aid at all when so many are starving, homeless and suffering due to lack of medical care, both in America and abroad? I suppose that we should be happy that at the last minute he changed his mind regarding testing nuclear weapons on the International Day of Peace!
