Many educators share a deep disappointment with the administration's education policy. We probably voted for President Obama because the Republican alternative was a worse choice. Now that the election is over we must use the time between the election and the inauguration to petition the President with the goal of advocating a change in the direction of federal education policy.

Arne Duncan has been the Obama administration's education policy architect and proponent. He is responsible for the extension of the Bush era policies of No Child Left Behind, and the mindless, test driven, competitive process that forces states to conform to unproven, so-called reforms promoted by the right wing that are changing the face, and tearing apart, public education. We have been held hostage as we vie for badly needed funds. Now is the time to demand his removal during the second term.

To:
President Obama, President of the United States
President of the United States
U.S. Senate
U.S. House of Representatives
•RESTORE HOPE •END “Race to the Top” •END testing ‘s tyranny •REMOVE Duncan

Sincerely,

The emphasis on standardized testing has resulted in a shift from teaching our students core knowledge and critical thinking to teaching them test taking skills. Hours that could be used helping children are now used preparing them for test taking. This cost the states millions of dollars that could be used to improve the quality of education. If I wanted my children to spend time practicing test taking, I would sign them up for Kaplan instead of public school.

Charter Schools are a failure. Business men are terrible school administrators. Exams teach kids nothing. Duncan attacks teachers instead of supporting them. Public schools and schoolteachers are a treasure — don't privatize!

The educational policies of the recent past have done nothing to improve the current state of public education in the United States. They ignore the real issues such as: a lack of adequate funding, poverty, minimal social services support and for many children, minimal or no parental participation and concern in their child's education. Let's stop pussyfooting around and make the appropriate changes where the greatest impact can be felt! The future is now!

Were education the only issue facing our nation, I would never have voted for you twice (as I did). I am convinced that the so called "Race to the Top" is a destructive program. And I do not see you as a friend to students, to their families, nor to their teachers. Prove me wrong; start by removing Duncan.

President Obama needs to move away from test driven "education reform" policy that is favored by Duncan and the blame the teachers choir.
