Please Say No To Glue Traps!

    1. Janis Totham-Davies
    2. Petition by

      Janis Totham-Davies

      Takoma Park, United States

It is very important to stop the sale of glue traps because these traps are extremely cruel and inhumane. The animal that is caught, be it bird, mammal or reptile, cannot escape once landing on the trap. This means that they either have the choice of starving to death or dying from dehydration, or chewing their own limbs off in the case of a mammal or reptile. There is no escape for a bird. Domestic animals often get caught on these traps too. There is no law that determines where a consumer may lay the traps outside or inside, so literally anything can be caught.

Glue traps need to be banned; they are vile torturing traps that have no place in modern America.

Lowes stores stopped selling them because of public pressure and animal agencies working together. I want to see all Ace Hardware Corporation stores remove glue traps from their shelves and announce that they will no longer be selling them in any of their stores. These traps are very toxic not only to wild and domestic animals but humans too.

Why You Should Never Use a Glue Trap

Also known as "glue boards" or "glue trays," sticky glue traps are made of pieces of plastic, cardboard, or fiberboard coated with a strong adhesive designed to trap any animal who wanders across or lands on their surface. Glue traps are among the most inhumane devices on the market today.

Wherever you see glue traps sold, be sure to send a polite letter to the store manager asking him or her to stop selling the traps and to sell humane live traps instead. Numerous chains, including CVS, Rite Aid (including Eckerd and Brooks), Supervalu Inc. (including Acme, Albertsons, Bristol Farms, Cub Foods, Farm Fresh, Jewel-Osco, Osco Drug, Save-a-Lot, Shaw’s, and Shop ‘n Save), and Safeway, stopped selling glue traps after hearing from concerned consumers.

If you encounter an animal who is stuck to a glue trap, pour a small amount of cooking oil or baby oil onto the stuck areas and gently work the animal free.

The only surefire way to keep mice and other animals out of your house is to make it less inviting to them. Use live traps to catch those who do enter so that you can release them outside. Please see our “Living in Harmony With Nature” factsheet for more tips on keeping wildlife outdoors.

      Cruel Wildlife Control

For every perceived conflict with wildlife, there is a humane solution. Drowning, trapping, poisoning, using glue traps, and other cruel wildlife "control" methods cause animals terrible, needless suffering. Drowning animals is illegal for good reason-the terror and pain that animals who are trapped underwater experience is unimaginable.

    6. Keep things clean!

      Janis Totham-Davies
      Petition Organizer

The problem of rodent intrusion is largely preventable by maintaining clean, sanitary conditions and plugging holes or cracks where mice or rats might enter a building. If traps are needed to remove mice or rats, humane box-type traps are available from humane societies and hardware stores and at PETACatalog.com. These traps are made from either plastic or metal and have a spring-release trap door at one end that closes behind the animal once he or she enters the trap. The trap can then be taken outside so that the animal can be released. When using these, be sure to check them every hour, as rodents have a high rate of metabolism and quickly become dehydrated when frightened.

    7. Glue traps pose a danger to humans too.

      Janis Totham-Davies
      Petition Organizer

Glue traps are also dangerous to human health. Animals who are trapped on these devices continue to produce urine and feces, which are sources of hantavirus. In one case, a hospital that used glue traps did not check them for more than a year—during that time, the dead mice who were stuck on the traps became hosts for a fly population that caused illness among the hospital’s patients.

      Solutions Without Suffering

In addition to being cruel, glue traps are ultimately ineffective. One exterminator told The New York Times that he had “seen rats scurry through a building and avoid an area where a trap had once been, though it was no longer there.” And the use of poisons can cause a painful death for cats, dogs, and other animals who either ingest them by mistake or eat the bodies of rodents who have been poisoned. Preventive measures, natural repellents, and nonlethal traps are the only humane options for controlling rodent populations.

    8. Protections don’t work!

      Janis Totham-Davies
      Petition Organizer

A regulatory impact statement released by the Australian government cited a study that concluded that glue traps should be banned “because of the enormous distress that these traps cause, even if the trapped animals are found after just a few hours & then humanely dispatched.” One New York City pest-control manager said that he had even seen rats chew off their own feet to escape from the traps.

The few laws that protect rodents from cruelty either conflict with other laws or are ignored. The Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act does not give the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency the authority to regulate pest-control devices unless there is evidence of false or misleading statements regarding the product, so rodents are not protected from inhumane forms of extermination. Research protocols & state laws that prohibit cruelty to animals often exclude rodents from protection despite the fact that rodents have the ability to suffer & feel pain the same as them.

    9. Glue Traps: Pans of Pain.

      Janis Totham-Davies
      Petition Organizer

Consumers spend millions of dollars each year on mousetraps, poisons, and exterminators in an effort to “control” rodent populations. Sticky glue traps cause an enormous amount of suffering and a traumatic death for the animals they catch. Humane methods of rodent control are available everywhere.

      What Is a Glue Trap?

A glue trap consists of a piece of cardboard, fiberboard, or plastic that is coated with a sticky adhesive. The pest-control industry also refers to the traps as “glue trays” or “glue boards.” Sticky traps are designed for indoor use because they can become covered with leaves and other loose material when placed outside. The makers of these devices usually state that trapped animals should be thrown away with the trap—leaving animals to suffer for days. Glue traps are completely indiscriminate, capturing birds, squirrels, snakes, gerbils, and other small animals—even kittens.

Inhumane to Animals, Dangerous to Humans, please do not buy them.

      MORE SHARING SERVICES
      September 2013

We received calls and e-mails from the public after news articles were published detailing the Nebraska Capitol Building's use of glue traps to kill rodents. We sent the facility's management officials information on the cruelty inherent in the use of glue traps, and they compassionately agreed to get rid of the traps and try our humane suggestions instead!

This warms my heart, and I want to say a huge thank you to the Nebraska Capitol Building for being big enough to see sense and make a bad situation right. We all thank you, and we will all spread the word because nothing on this planet deserves to die in agony and terror just because we humans do not like it!

      Janis Totham-Davies
      Petition Organizer

Here I am again refreshed and back from my family and friends in the UK where I was born sixty years ago! I have come to realize that many people in the UK have never heard of glue traps because they have never seen them in the shops in the UK, I only wish that it was the same here.

When I described to family and friends what a glue trap is and what it does to any animal unfortunate enough to be caught on one, they were truly horrified that anyone could sell such a disgustingly cruel contraption! But very sadly it is all too true here in the United States which is why I am going to do my very best, with the kind help of all of you, to put a stop to them forever! So let us pull out all the stops and get this petition moving on, because my ultimate goal is at least five thousand signatures by the end of this year! We have very nearly hit the two thousand mark which
is really fantastic so let's keep it moving by posting it anywhere you can on your media sites:~) Thank you!

    19. Goodbye Thornberry. RIP.

      Janis Totham-Davies
      Petition Organizer

I am very sad to say that dear Thornberry the last brother of my trio of beautiful rat ambassadors died yesterday, & I have buried him in our back garden. He was the last rat out of my three ratty boys to die. He had been missing the company of his brothers, who both died last year in May & September, very much. He had become my evening lap-rat & would curl up to sleep on my lap, with our cat Lucy, next to us on the sofa. I will miss him as I miss his two brothers, Merlin & Wordsworth. If you look at the photo of the three brothers on my petition, Thornberry is on the right with two black spots on his back. Merlin is white & in the middle & Wordsworth is on the left with three black spots.

The three brothers were well traveled as they went everywhere with me! Merlin & Thornberry are now buried in our back garden; Wordsworth is buried in Newfoundland, Pennsylvania at Journey’s End Farm, where he died last September when we were singing our duets at the annual farm gathering. RIP boys.

We have made it over the first 1000 signatures at last, 1,017 so far, how fantastic. Last year I was beginning to doubt that we could even make the first 1000 but today it has surpassed that :~) I am such a happy bunny! So, a huge thank you to you all as this is all because of you out there showing you care. Now we have reached this milestone I will up the ante to 2000 soon, as it is set at 1,500 at the moment until the end of March. I know that we can end the misery of glue traps by spreading the word, so please do continue to pass this petition on to friends and relatives and other sites on the net. Thank you all and enjoy the impending spring, it is just around the corner now!

UnionBanCal, the 28th largest financial institution in the nation, with more than 400 branch locations, agreed to a companywide glue-trap policy! The change was communicated to all staff as well as its pest control vendors. Since glue traps were almost certainly being used in some UnionBanCal locations, this new policy is especially exciting! This victory means that 22 of the top 30 financial institutions are now glue trap–free!

glue traps are not the answer--not by a long shot. they are a lazy man's way of catching and torturing anything that wanders into them. as often as not the traps ensnare an innocent pet, bird, bat or other mammal member of the local wildlife community, but even when it is the targeted rat/mouse/whatnot that is caught, it is still a horrible and cruel manner with which to trap/kill. animals in general should be spared this torture, but when relocation by trap and release and deterrence by repellents and such are not effective choices, then only the most humane of the cost effective methods should be employed. PLEASE SAY NO TO GLUE TRAPS!
