Harlingen, Texas:  Police were called out when neighbors heard Jose Gonzales abusing his dog Champ.  Gonzales had beat Champ until his face, mouth and nose were bloody.  According to the Harlingen police department press release, officers immediately noticed blood on the floor by the front door.  Gonzales has been arrested for animal cruelty and Champ is being held at the Harlingen Humane Society as part of the animal cruelty case.

Champ has already been though a lot.  But now, a judge may decide if, once the 10-day holding period is up, whether Gonzales will be allowed to take Champ back.   According to the Facebook page set up for Champ, there are offers from rescues willing to help:  https://www.facebook.com/ChampThePitbull

As in some animal abuse cases, the judge may also rule that Champ is "unadoptable”, in which case he will be euthanized.

We respectfully request that Champ not be allowed to be returned to his owner, Jose Gonzales, but that he be released to a rescue organization.  Also that Jose Gonzales be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Just this week, about two week later after his initial freedom, Champ died from complications associated with distemper, according to his attorney.

Veterinarians say distemper is a viral infection that affects a dog's central nervous system.

Records show Champ had been vaccinated against the disease by his owner but it was past due.

The shelter believes distemper, coupled with his heartworm problem, only complicated matters.

Richard Rosenthal, co-founder of the Lexus Project, wants Champ to be remembered as a dog who inspired a movement.
"He was truly loved and he died knowing he was loved... and not in a cage and not being abused and for that we're grateful," he said.
      Champ's memory will live on.

    2. Update on Hand4Paws Petition for Champ the pit bull from South Texas:

Champ rescued from euthanization by a Group out of New York.
After weeks of sitting in quarantine, a pit bull named Champ, is set free.
"We're rescuing champ," said representatives from the Laguna Madre Humane Society.
The 4 year old dog had been punched in the face by his owner when Champ tried to protect another dog in his home that was getting hit for making a mess.
He faced possible euthanization until a non profit animal rights group called the Lexus Group out of New York jumped in to save Champ, offering to pay whatever it takes to make sure the pup never has to suffer again.
The only problem is that Gonzalez has decided not to relinquish his rights to Champ just yet.
For now, champ will go to a foster home. Please continue reading at :

Champ cannot be released to this criminal abuser, and he doesn't deserve punishment for the crimes of his owner! Release him to a rescue organization who will find him a loving home.
