Urge the New Hanover Board of Commissioners to Re-Think Their Vote

    1. Petition by

      Patricia Dillon

The board's unanimous decision to turn down a state family planning grant that would cover contraceptive and other family planning services is an offensive and demeaning affront on women seeking basic health care! Birth control is basic health care that has real health and economic benefits for women in our community. It helps prevent unintended pregnancies and is directly linked to improving a woman’s health and the health of her family. Every dollar spent on prevention, saves taxpayers $4 in the long run.

I believe that no one’s politics should interfere with a woman’s access to birth control.

I see hundreds of young women each year with numerous children by multiple fathers who experience financial restraints, depression and are overwhelmed due to poor choices. As a result of their stress/illness, the children are abused/neglected, and in extreme cases, removed from the family and placed in foster care. Due to financial restraints of the extended family, placements are not always with them. This causes more issues for the children, the biological mother, and financially for the state, as the children need to be cared for. In the long run, birth control is the cheaper, better alternative.

I am outraged and appalled that our local politicians have voted against basic women's rights. It makes me wonder...How do YOU treat your wives and daughters??

The days of women being barefoot and pregnant are over. This is 2012, not 1800, and the best prevention IS prevention.

I really don't think that this agenda matter comes down to a gender matter. It's much more about elected officials across the nation who are increasingly incapable of seeing the proverbial big picture. E.G., Mr. Catlin's statement is clearly reflective of someone who just doesn't get that contraception, by its very essence, is indicative of a high level of responsibility. Sounds like something that "Mo" (i.e., George W.) Bush would say.
