Dear Mayor Stanton, Council and Staff,
Phoenix is the 6th largest city in the country, yet we are chasing the caboose when it comes to common sense sustainability measures. It is currently illegal for the City of Phoenix to offer recycling services to businesses and condos/apartments that have more than 30 units. This is simply unacceptable. Only private companies can provide trash service at these facilities, and they often do not provide the opportunity to recycle. Recycling is one of the easiest ways to conserve natural resources and help the environment.
The Phoenix Environmental Quality Commission and the Sustainability Task Force (Phoenix Green Team) have requested that the City Council change the city law so that the city can provide service to ALL residences and businesses that want recycling service from the city. Picking up recycling at apartments and businesses is much more cost effective than picking up recycling at individual homes, so this change will likely reduce solid waste bills for homeowners and businesses as well.
This is from a 2006 AZ Republic article: "Valley cities say they don't offer recycling to apartments and condos because those residents won't take advantage of the service. They also fear that contamination, regular garbage mixed with recyclables, would be too high because of the anonymity that shared trash bins offer. They also say there is simply no demand."
This petition should demonstrate to you, Mayor Stanton, Phoenix City Council and staff, that your constituents - the citizens and business owners of Phoenix - care about recycling and want this law changed.
If we are going to repair our economy and retain the future leaders of our city, it must start with stepping into the 21st century and taking cue from every other progressive thinking city across the nation to offer recycling services to EVERYONE.
Please do the right thing.
