Petition to Support Fields for Youth Sports at Salona Park

    1. Petition by

      McLean Youth Soccer

Over the past 3 years MYS has experienced a net loss of six fields in the McLean area with no new fields being constructed. As a result, we have over 120 players that travel to Herndon to practice from 9-10:30 pm and others will probably join them in the spring when we will lose the Police Field due to the $20.1 million expansion and renovation of the McLean Government Center and Dranesville Supervisor's office.

The only new fields that are in the foreseeable future are the 2 fields that are planned for Salona Park. Supervisor Foust and a few others are opposing the construction of fields there in spite of the fact that the Park Authority paid $16.1 million to the Duval Family with the understanding that 2 fields would be built there.

We need your support to help to convince Supervisor Foust and the Task Force that we need and want the fields. Your support is critical.

McLean Youth Athletics, Inc., in conjunction with youth sport organizations including McLean Youth Soccer, McLean Youth Lacrosse, McLean Rugby, McLean Track, McLean Football and McLean High School Athletic Booster Club desires to promote the construction of new fields in McLean for all McLean youth sports.

Currently, MYA with its members and other youth sport organizations in McLean is seeking community support for the construction of two unlit grass fields at Salona Park as provided for in the Deed of Open-Space and Conservation Easement purchased by Fairfax County for $16 Million and as proposed in the Master Plan for Salona Park prepared by the Fairfax County Park Authority.

We, the undersigned, hereby petition the Salona Park Task Force, Fairfax County Park Authority and Supervisor John Foust to support and promote the construction two new unlit rectangular grass fields at Salona Park as provided for in the Deed of Open-Space and Conservation Easement and proposed in the Fairfax County Park Authority Master Plan for Salona Park.

    1. Residents Asked for Suggestions on Updating, New Uses for Langley Fork Park

Fairfax County paid more than $16 million to have access to the space at Salona Park to include two unlit grass fields. Those fields are in jeopardy because we did not speak loudly enough that we needed them early in the process. There are not enough fields today in the Dranesville District to adequately meet the needs of all the youth athletes who play here. This deficit will only get worse as our population grows.

The Fairfax County Park Authority has initiated the process to revise the master plan for Langley Fork Park. A key element of the master plan process is the incorporation of community input. To help inform this process, the Park Authority will host a Public Information meeting on the evening of October 13, 2011, from 7:00-8:30 p.m., at Franklin Sherman Elementary School.

If we are not there, they will think we do not want or need these fields. Your participation is greatly appreciated and we expect that a strong response will help us achieve the goals of this effort.

We continue to need fields nearby for our children to grow. We will be losing a field at Haycock elementary school with the county's proposed renovations.

We need more fields in the area for kids sports, especially in this age when kids need physical activity more than ever! Don't take away their play space where they can learn so many life skills such as teamwork and sportsmanship.

Save our children's opportunity to play sports outside in our OWN TOWN. At this point, we are losing fields at Haycock and no telling when they will let Longfellow's be used. Do the right thing for our community Fairfax County Park Authority! Isn't this why you bought the land?

Because my kids play MYS soccer, and that's what the land was purchased for!!
