Oppose Development east of Skaneateles into The Victory Sports Campus .

The residents oppose this mega-sports complex plan of commercial over-development and the intrusion of non-residential activity as it will have a devastating effect on the quality of life in the surrounding residential neighborhoods and overall unique quality of Skaneateles Village and Township, as well as adverse environmental impacts upon the area surrounding the proposed complex. The historical documented impacts of such development that we want to prevent by denying this proposal include traffic congestion, increased crime, significant loss of property values, and environmental threats such as air pollution from all the extra cars and team buses, light glare from the sports fields, excess noise and change in the overall image and appearance of the community of Skaneateles.

I read this in answer to a recent letter to the Editor with regard to the VSM complex creating economic growth and new jobs: I think its worth sharing. :
      More information to consider:
The following excerpt is from a review done SPECIFICALLY on THE ECONOMICS of Sports Facilities and their Communities by the Journal Of Economic Perspectives.
This is just a sampling of the study, but it CLEARLY DOES NOT SUPPORT the assumption of opinions made by Mr. Daley and many of the Comments here listed.

While we were out shopping for the holidays in our "story book village", the developer was ramping up his legal team. According to a news release earlier this week in the Skaneateles Press VSM has hired the firm that represents Destiny USA.
"The firm of Gilberti, Stinziano, Heinz and Smith will join the VSM team in 2013, Lance Wardell, VSM chief operating officer, confirmed last week...The Gilberti firm is well-known for its intricate and large-scale legal work, especially as lead counsel for the Destiny USA shopping mall development in Syracuse." Happy New Year to all of you, and your families. Let's make sure the petition continues to grow and that we secure the same "Crystal Village" for our families that we have enjoyed. Let's keep it a wonderful legacy and Destiny!

Huge water consumption, Huge facility on SEPTIC not Sewers, 4 times + the 20 ft Code for lighting, an outdated traffic study, No realistic Parking ability, 3 protected wetlands, AA rated Stream in close proximity to Astro Turf, heavy metal run off above the watershed, all within 600 feet to the village edge... a village who's soul is a pristine lake and story book setting. WHY are we even HAVING this discussion?? This is outrageously WRONG. It will be the mistake that will annihilate our self image. People in favor of this are grossly naive. PLEASE question the basics at least: water, sewer, light pollution, pa systems, noise, heavy metals, traffic congestion, loss of property value, flooded motel and hotel market affecting our unique tourist trade. For what? ONE DEVELOPERS COMMERCIAL DREAM is going to be our LEGACIES NIGHTMARE! Town and Village Boards, PLEASE we are BEGGING you, rescue the future of this town and its citizens, you are our Gatekeepers.

This notice was just published on the Town of Skaneateles website. While at the Town Office we were informed that this meeting is to address the letter with regard to water usage from the Director of Municipal Operations, Bob Lotkowictz P.E.. The Skaneateles Town Planning Board and Victory Sports Medicine will be in attendance.
Since the ZBA has not completed its Public Hearing, and has taken no final action on the Variance requested, a Public Hearing before the Planning Board will not occur November 27, 2012. However, the Planning Board has scheduled a special meeting for November 27, 2012 to be located in the Auditorium at the Skaneateles High School, with the Victory Sports Enterprises LLC application being placed on the agenda for continued review. All are welcome and encouraged to attend this special meeting, though it will not be a Public Hearing to hear interested parties for or against the application, as previously mentioned. PLEASE ATTEND IF YOU CAN

    6. Developer asks us not to base our information on "common sense"

      Susan Taylor
      Petition Organizer

In the Nov14th Edition of The Skaneateles Press, The developer states that "the burden of proof needs to be on the facts, not that it's 'obvious' or 'common sense."'
So would the concerned citizens of Skaneateles and their representatives please refrain from relying on their common sense, and try hard to overlook the obvious, so that developer can get this slipped past the board members and our community. I know this will be hard to do, but try focusing on the windfall of profit you'd make if it were your "dream," and perhaps that will help.

VSM = 12+ ball fields, some artificial turf, an orthopedic medical office w/4 operating suites, urgent care center; physical therapy/athletic conditioning; fitness center; banquet facilities and cafeteria, concession stands; bleachers; pa systems BUT it will only use 6,800 gallons of water a day, all of which (including the medical waste) will be filtered by 7 septic mounds, which will also filter the runoff from parking lots, fields and the chemicals needed to maintain them... All just a few blocks uphill of the lake that provides the drinking water for Syracuse and Skaneateles.

I am very much against something of this magnitude in Skaneateles. It does not fit in with the character and charm of the area. Also, it would be a detriment to the environment.

The sports complex is simply too big for our rural community.

I am particularly concerned about the traffic into and out of the village from this complex. It is often difficult now to make the left turn from Rt. 20 onto East Lake Rd. With this new addition to the trafrfic it would become a major problem at peak times.

    • Sandra Holbrook SKANEATELES, NY

This should be built near an interstate as Skaneateles cannot handle the traffic involved with a complex this large. Not opposed to idea but where it is being located.

    • Mary Margaret Adams SKANEATELES, NY
      • over 1 year ago

This complex is too big for the village structure and the impact to the water systems and road structure will have a negative impact on our "small quaint community".

    • David Miller SKANEATELES, NY

Studied of similar sized complexes indicate an annual attendance of at least 100,000 spectators and participants. Our precious and unique Village simply cannot support those numbers. The traffic alone will be a disaster, never mind the demands on our water system and the lack of sewage treatment options, other than on-site, smack in the middle of the Shotwell Brook watershed leading to Skaneateles Lake. It needs to be located elsewhere where it can be properly supported and succeed.

    • Nancy Thomas SKANEATELES, NY

It would be in competition with already existing facilities in the area and might put them out of business. It is also so big should be near airport or city.
