• Petitioning Penn State University Administration

This petition will be delivered to:

Penn State University Administration

I demand that Penn State ensure that graduate students do not experience pay losses as a result of the increased costs for health care.

The proposed health insurance plan will create a financial burden for many graduate students and their families. Graduate students provide invaluable teaching and research assistance both formally and informally to Penn State University. Given the amount of publications, teaching, and additional support we provide to this University, we do not believe it is right to expect us to experience pay cuts in order to maintain our right to affordable healthcare. By coming together, we believe that graduate students can unite with one voice to advocate for a stronger commitment from the University to ensure our basic rights to affordable health coverage that does not result in a pay cut.

Penn State University Administration
I demand that Penn State ensure that graduate students do not experience pay losses as a result of the increased costs for health care.

Sincerely,

It is grossly unfair for graduate students to suffer salary loss in order to maintain decent healthcare.

I am very grateful NOT to be a graduate student anymore because of these changes. However, my boyfriend is a graduate student, and as someone with outside funding, he is required to front the entire cost of the health insurance, which will now total about 20% of his stipend. This is RIDICULOUS and needs to be addressed now!

As A penn state faculty member, i am very disappointed that Penn State has once again demonstrated that it does not "walk the talk," that those who do much of the hardest teaching--in this case, grad students--and among the university's lowest priorities. once again, the morale of those who do much of the university's hardest work is hardly considered.

Penn State needs to become a leader in inventing sustainable solutions to problems in higher education instead of serving as a ready example of the corporate causes of those problems. HUGS (Healthcare Uniting Graduate Students) not only deserves our solidarity; faculty and staff might learn how to stand up for our own collective rights by watching, supporting, and learning from our graduate students.
