Wednesday morning I got a call from my sister to tell me that my nephew's school lost a freshman girl to suicide. The school has been careful with any details but Social Media pages made in her honor are buzzing with comments on the bullying and cyberbullying she was facing, including a twitter page with nasty posts about her.
The superintendent claims that they work with every issue of cyberbullying brought to their attention. It is unclear whether Cameron had brought this to her schools attention or, if she had, how they were addressing the issue. I do think it's important that we not play Monday morning quarterback with this issue and be sympathetic to the pain the school must be facing at this time. The only thing that is clear: Cameron felt that taking her life was the only remaining option.
As schools continue to develop effective means of dealing with cyberbullying, we as a community must continue to support the efforts to develop legal tools for our youth!
