Allow for the US 1 Overpass to built through Mariposa

    1. Petition by

      University of Miami Student Government

Since 1989, eight UM students have been struck by vehicles while attempting to cross U.S. 1 around Mariposa Court, the intersection of the shopping center. Three of those students' lives were abruptly ended by the tragedies. After nearly eight years, the county has approved the project. About $6 million in funding at the state and federal level has been allocated, and an overpass has been designed. But Miami-Dade County can’t begin construction because it hasn’t acquired the five parking spaces in the northeast corner of the University Centre parking lot needed to place the eastern pedestal of the bridge. The county has offered the owner $1.85 million to compensate for the loss of five parking spaces needed to anchor the bridge across the street from the Metrorail station and the nearby UM. In addition, the county has offered the strip center owner 10 parking spaces at the Metrorail station across South Dixie Highway. The mall owner has not budged. We hope this petition sends the message that as a community, we are invested in the safety of our students and residents and that no dollar amount can be placed on a human being's life.

I believe all metrorail stations south of the Brickell station need an overpass. The traffic on US-1 is extremely dangerous for pedestrians.

Resident of the neighborhood for 40 years and recognize the need to correct the issues surrounding this extremely dangerous intersection.

It is important to correct a dangerous situation to human life in which both the students and the public would be more incline to patronize the shopping center upon the elimination situation that has cause the death of 3 students. The shopping center will lose 5 parking spaces and that is a major obstacle to the completion of the project. The shopping center would earn positive neighborhood loyalty for being more receptive reaching a consensus to this situation. Why is this important to you? (Optional)

As a previous University of Miami student who lived off campus without motor vehicle transportation, I attest that other forms of commuting have very limited infrastructure and support. Anything we can do to improve it is a step in the right direction.
