Shut down the Animalerie St-Andre at the Encan Larose Flea Market

The St. Andrew Pet Store (Animalerie St-Andre) in Masson-Angers, Quebec has a variety of pets that are kept in filthy, cramped cages, often with empty water and food dishes. These animals live in filth, some in their own feces and urine. They are in cages so cramped that they can barely turn around. Much of this obvious neglect contributes to disease and mental deterioration. Here are some of the horrors from a recent eye-witness report:

Cats: 5 cats piled on top of each other in a cage much too small for even one cat
Puppies: covered in mats, dirt and feces, cramped cages full of feces and urine
Lizards: no food or water, lacking the proper lighting they need to produce vitamin D for calcium consumption (UV lights) or the appropriate heating lights to maintain their body temperatures
Ferrets: four ferrets cramped in a cage with no blankets, toys or means of entertaining themselves, dirty food and water bowls, pine shavings which cause respiratory distress
Hedgehogs: no house to hide in, dirty water and food dishes

In spite of numerous complaints to the store owner, SPCA and city officials, nothing has been done to help these suffering animals who are deprived of the basic necessities. This is a case of cruelty and neglect. The store must be shut down. The owners obviously know very little about the animals they are selling and do not care about their well being.

The province of Quebec has the worst reputation for strict animal cruelty enforcement, but with the recent modifications of its animal welfare laws, the types of cages animals can be kept in, the quality of the food and water given to the animals and mandatory exercise – all of it is now regulated.

We respectfully request that this pet store be closed down and the animals confiscated and taken to shelters where they can be examined, treated, and eventually adopted to caring homes.

Thank you to all who so far have signed this important petition for animal cruelty and neglect at the Masson Flea Market pet store. Although the owners of the pet store have cleaned up the cages and provided food and water to the animals, we will keep the petition circulating, and we will be monitoring the conditions on a regular basis. If the conditions deteriorate, we will hold a demonstration, deliver the petition to the Mayor, Councillor and SPCA, and push for closing this business down.
