Orange County Council: Reject the Boy Scouts of America anti-gay policy

    1. Petition by

      James "Chris" Ramirez

      Brea, CA

We, the Scouts and community members of Orange County urge the Orange County Council to reject the Boy Scouts of America's anti-gay policy.

Among service organizations, the Boy Scouts are increasingly isolating themselves with their discriminatory policy. Organizations including the Girl Scouts, the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, as well as the 4H Club all welcome gay kids as well as adult leaders.

We love the Boy Scouts, but we can’t support this policy. That's why we urge you to speak out against the ban on gay Scouts and leaders and adopt an inclusive policy like other troops, packs, councils, and lodges across the country have done -- so the Boy Scouts can maintain its relevancy, improve recruitment, and truly live by the principles it teaches its members.

NOTE: We encourage everyone to join this campaign, but if you're a current or former Scout or leader, please say so in the "Why People Are Signing" section. Thanks!

Never in my years of scouting (I was an Eagle Scout who earned the Order of the Arrow and God and Country Award) did I hear of scouting's anti-gay policy. As an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ for 20 years, I am sickened at this hateful policy. It goes against everything Christ stood for in welcoming those society rejected as other! I was very proud of my years in scouting and I pray that scouting can embrace the values it claims to uphold.

Young scouts shouldn't be learning about discrimination at such a young age. This makes me sick! My brother had a great time as a kid when he was in boy scouts, something like this was never an issue. Now young kids are going to be deprived of learning and making friends because of how they were born!???!

I am an Eagle Scout (Troop 461, 1970); my son is an Eagle Scout (Troop 772, 2005) and I served as Troop Chaplain for Troop 772. As an ordained United Methodist Minister I could not now, in good conscience, put my son into scouting. I have taught my son the values of openness and acceptance of ALL people and current BSA policies do not reflect those values. I urge you to encourage the national office to renounce the current anti-gay policies of Scouting.

How can we teach our boys tolerance and compassion when a great organization like BSA is discrimatory in their policies.
