Oprah Winfrey Network: Remove Tyler Perry entertainment from OWN

For decades Oprah Winfrey has used her television show to educate, empower, and uplift people of all races to be better versions of themselves. OWN has committed to be an extension of this work.

Where it is clear that neither Oprah or Tyler Perry are experts on race and racism, they have also refused to utilize feedback from the conscious Black community and scholars on racism regarding the damage that Tyler Perry and his brand of entertainment perpetuate against the Black community.

Stop supporting racist stereotypes on OWN and remove Tyler Perry programming!

Here's what we know: Most people have no idea about the impact of stereotypes and negative imagery on equality and equity issues, and neither does Oprah. As long as YOU continue to talk with people about it, this little petition doesn't have to have thousands of signatures. We end ignorance one small convo at a time. The smallest of drips, over time, created the Grand Canyon.

Thanks for all of the support thus far! Though I can genuinely say that there are some aggressive TP & Oprah fans (having received a few hate emails, & trolling type Facebook posts and tweets,) I can say that for the most part there has been much productive dialogue about this petition. I never imagined how many blogs and news sources would have an interest in this petition- even if they are hating, folks are talking! It one person takes the time to re-calibrate their thinking, I'm satisfied. But I would like OWN to reconsider this Perry foolishness.

I encourage all of you who have chosen to promote the petition to emphasize this: we are exercising our freedom & working for change! This is about asking OWN and Oprah to remain consistent with their brand. We may not like the Perry brand, but he certainly can exercise his free speech.

Next steps? What are your thoughts about it? If you are interested in a having an active role or just lurk, let me know!

      With gratitude,

I just feel the most of Tyler Perry's work is not up to par to be on the Oprah network. It's like he has taken it over.there's just too much Tyler Perry on the network.
