Support MUNACA

    1. Petition by

      Micha Stettin

We write in support of the MUNACA workers and their strike. It is unacceptable to cut the pensions and benefits of the permanent non-academic workers at McGill, and equally unacceptable to offer them an insufficient 1.2% pay raise. It is necessary for all members of the McGill community to receive fair and decent treatment, and we demand that MUNACA receive just that.

I am the president of an union representing support and technical employees under the Quebec's Education Ministry. Our daily efforts to make the system work properly is rarely recognise to it's actual and just value.

As a student, I support the MUNACA members' right to enjoy better salaries and benefits. I am also shocked at McGill's efforts to suppress their free speech.

My daughter is a student at McGill and the price of an education includes respectable wages and benefits for all those involved in providing it.

I began working at McGill on August 29, 1970: I believe this makes me a veteran who witnessed the rise and fall of good labor relations in our University; we DID have our golden era, but the Administration began isolating non-academic salary mass as the only factor responsible for the growing deficits. At the same period, a new super structure was growing like a fire out of control: the Babel tower called Management. Today McGill University has become an overmanaged monster and I personally don't see the savings in this strategy except of course in pure Machiavelian terms where it has allowed the Administration to prolong this strike beyond logic. I know in my heart that the MUNACA/PSAC tandem will eventually obtain a decent contract for the employees on strike; however the lenght of time it will have taken to reach this goal, will leave deep scars.

I have worked for 10 years as a part-timer at McGill with wonderful hard-working committed people who are underpaid. It is time that the high-level administration treats them better. Aren't we supposed to live in a democratic society where everyone is entitled to freedom of speech? So please McGill listen to the demands of MUNACA. You are not only hurting the members of MUNACA but also the rest of the McGill community and you are bringing division among departments and work teams..
