 Why I have Chickens

I'm starting this petition in hopes to keep my Backyard chickens that I've grown to love just as anyone loves any pet they have. After much research I started caring for a flock September 24th, 2013. The Breed is a White Faced Black Spanish Bantam [Bantams are smaller chickens] Eventually with more research I decided to try my luck in incubating. I was successful twice with a hatch of 3 out of 4 and 14 out of 15. Obviously I did not keep all these birds. The first 3 I kept and nurtured to the point where I would go outside, they would hop on my arm, follow me around the yard, be held by children, and even cradled like a baby rubbing her belly until she fell asleep. Each of these chickens I've incubated have their own name along with the original flock members I kept.

Above is a link to other peoples testimonies of why they keep backyard Birds. My reasons are exactly the same: Fresh organic eggs, Entertainment, Fertilizer for my growing garden, and bug control. Not all of my chickens lay eggs. Do I discard them like a piece of trash because of that? No. I love each and every single one of them. They all have different personalities and I enjoy going in my backyard in the morning time to feed them and just sit with them especially since all I do is work mostly these days. At 24 I enjoy the surine environment it brings even though some may not see that. Just like gardening is a stress reliever so is having backyard birds. I understand it's not for everyone, but I hope to open more peoples eyes when it comes to Chickens and other backyard Birds.

The BCC denied the possibility of changing the ordinance in Okaloosa county. I received my first citation last Friday for $350. I went to the courthouse to contest it. Right now I am waiting to hear from a judge for what goes on next. County commissioner Boyles told me to contact him if the Code enforcement were to come by, which I did. Still have not heard back from him (today is 9-10-14). Crossing my fingers at this stressful moment in my

They are joyfull animals. I think if people want to start feeding their children / family healthy foods. They should be allowed. These eggs are natural and we know where they come from.

I have backyard chickens, all with names and distinct personalities. They come running when I walk into the yard and some jump on my lap. Their eggs are much more nutritious than store bought and our tick problem has nearly vanished. There are so many reasons to allow hens and so few reasons to ban; I truly hope my neighbors in Okaloosa County can have their chickens back.

I want my parents to have chickens so we can have fresh eggs. They live on a very large piece of property and the chickens would be a lovely touch. The farm to table movement is sweeping the nation and I would be so proud if my hometown of Mary Esther would make this step forward.
