On change.org currently is a anti-bullying petition with the idea of mandatory enforcement of anti-bullying legislation in every school across the USA. I conducted some quantitative primary research within the UK, as I interviewed and received anonymous statements from bullying victims. This research showed that in the north west the changes in the types of bullying policies in high schools were the leading factor in not dealing with bullying effectively.
Bullying is not the same as disputes between friends, it is an unprovoked, sustained campaign of aggression. I also conducted a large amount of statistical data which showed 160,000 children in the UK stay home to avoid bullying. It is estimated that each year in the UK 5000 people take their life. The Samaritans estimate there is a suicide every 82 minutes. There are around 19,000 suicide attempts by children and teens in the UK, 1 in 6 of these being under the age of 11.
These statistics alone show that these changes are very valid to society, this petition could stop the ignorance of bullying by authority in schools. Bullying is also the leading factor of causing long term mental disorders such as depression, PTSD ,anorexia and other BDD sub types. A large number of young adults who are sectioned admit to being bullied in schools.
The BBC posted a shocking news article on 19th September 2009 which suggested that heads aren't being held accountable for the bullying in schools even though the National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT) claimed otherwise. One woman saw her son being attacked by 40 other pupils with temporary road signs. I believe that with enough support, we can make a change and at least reduce the amount of physical and verbal harassment in educational institutions within the UK.
I can not do this without your support, the US petition currently has 1,500 signatures. I know if we can achieve this amount of signatures, someone will listen. Speak out for the children, please give your support with a simple signature, no money involved, just a voice.
