On Saturday, 22 September 2012 a 10-year-old boy, Deividas (David) Jucys was knocked down and killed while crossing Friary Road, Newark. This was close to his home. The accident happened by a busy mini-roundabout where there are no appropriate pedestrian crossings. However, there are at least three primary schools and much residential housing in the immediate area. It is a problem area for adults needing to cross the road and is especially dangerous for young children.

To prevent future tragic accidents like the one that killed David, it is proposed to present a petition of local residents to Nottingham County Council via the Ward Councillor so that an appropriate pedestrian crossing can be constructed.

I think that this is one of the many dangerous crossing places in Newark another being at the junction of Hawton Road and London Road near the traffic lights. A pedestrian crossing there would also be very much appreciated. At the moment it is extremely difficult to judge when it is safe to cross.

I have a son of a similar age to David and it breaks my heart to think what his parents are going through. A tragic waste of a young life, roads need to be safer, much safer.
