Victory

From petition creator Nicole Linder: For now we have won this issue!! A million thanks for all the support, comments and work that people have done!!!!! We will continue to work as a community to be involved and informed on the calendar process.

The Northfield School Board wants to start the 2013/2014 school year in early August. They are not adding days to the school Calendar. Why take summer away for no logical reason. People already have their plans set for next summer. Kids will miss out on 4- H, summer camps and vacations. Older kids saving for college will miss out on summer employment.  Meetings on this issue will take place on 1/15, 1/17 and 1/22 from 7pm to 9pm in the Northfield High School upper cafeteria. Please sign this petition and attend a meeting to tell the Board WE DON'T WANT THIS! They will be doing a final vote the end of January and sending their plan to the state for appoval. We need to  stop this in the next couple of weeks or it will be too late. We will be gaining a few extra days in May as school will be done around May 27th but, August will be gone for making family memories indifinitely.

Well, 26 people spoke up at the school board meeting last night- Including a group of Rice County 4-H kids. Everyone spoke beautifully. The kids did a fantastic job. So proud of everyone who supported this cause. A joy to see all the community involvement. The board agreed to table the Calendar for another year to give Northfield more time. This is a victory but, a proposal will come up again in another year. We will remain vigilant and keep our face book page. Thanks a million everyone!!!!!!! Job well done!!!!!!!!!!

    7. New Information from MN State Board of Education

I talked to the State Board of Education today. I was told if the Northfield School board submits their proposal to the State Board and it is complete, it will more than likely be approved. The MN State Board of Education defers to local districts as that is the way the MN State Educational system has always been. All 25 of the Southern MN districts that wanted to start before Labor Day in 2010 were granted the waiver to do so by the State of MN. One district's plan was not complete, so they had to wait but, they were granted it the following year.

Because my family has always taken vacations in the middle to end of August and if this passes we will never be able to have a family vacation again until the kids graduate high school.

this will conflict with boy scouting events and vacation plans, not a good idea. why does this need to happen? i dont hear any good reasons. this is a bad idea.

Education is so much more than getting ready for tests. By shifting the calendar to allow for more instructional days before high stakes tests, we are conceding that the test prep is the primary purpose of our schools. It's not.

Keep single days off during the school year. It is a great break for kids to catch up on sleep; especially during the cold/flu season. Summer is short. We want ALL of August. This is an important month for our family for traveling. Don't take this away from us!

The people of the Northfield School District have the right to have their opinions heard and they have the right to be given sufficient information and ample time to consider changes to their school system as significant and as impactful as this proposed change. The elected and hired school board and superintendent of schools have the responsibility to provide such information to the public that they serve, to seek the input of the the public that they serve, and to provide the public that they serve enough time to determine whether a proposed change to their school system is something they support or whether it is something that they do not support. The people of the Northfield community have the right to express their concerns to their elected and employed school officials. These officials have an obligation to listen to these concerns and not to dismiss such concerns because they might not be consisent with their own personal opinions, goals or ambitions.
