Yes! Perdue vetoed the fracking bill! http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2012/07/01/3355505/perdue-vetoes-fracking-bill.html Thank you, thank you, thank you everyone who signed this petition and the others circulating around. It's not over, but that was winning a battle for sure. Now email, call, text, skywrite, etc. your local reps. and tell them you do NOT want them to override this veto. Last, if Mcrory is elected, it's back to square one becAUe the oil and gas companies will have a direct route to their wildest dreams. So take action accordingly in November. I'm sure there will be another version of this petition tailored just for him. He actually lives right around the corner from me, maybe I'll hand-deliver it! On the other hand, if Walter Dalton wins, I think this issue sits fallow for at least four years. Deep breath and whew. We dodged one there. Thank you all.

The water and air of this state are too precious to be haphazardly contaminated by fracking. Too many people and animals depend on our groundwater for life. The risks of contamination are too high, the benefits to fracking when we have a surplus of natural gas are too small, and our actions seal the fate for future generations.

Hydraulic fracking is one of the many environment and safety issues the global community faces. In the US, hydraulic fracking is increasing in many parts of the country.  North Carolina sits on a relatively small deposit of these gases, and attempts are bing made by mining and energy companies to exploit this find.   This process:

* Releases harmful toxins and chemicals into the environment, affecting groundwater, livestock, people, communities and biodiversity.

http://www.earthworksaction.org/hydfracking.cfm

* Releases harmful gases into the environment which would affect the air and water quality and thus, would affect the health and safety of people, communities and biodiversity. This also undermines the UN and global community efforts in adapting and mitigating global warming and climate change efforts.

* If fracking is carried out in many regions of the world, then the released warming gases into the environment would certainly further worsen global warming and climate change.

http://www.emagazine.com/daily-news/fracking-is-worse-than-coal

* Can cause tremors or earthquakes. Cavities are made in the earth by removing this volume of gas.  They could affect the well being of communities through property damagey and safety; and long term stability of terrains.

http://www.earthworksaction.org/fracturingearthquakes.cfm

* Destroy and fragment natural environment which would further harm such as biodiversity, preserved landscapes, natural resources and communities.

http://www.earthworksaction.org/FracingDetails.cfm

* Earth is a living organism, fracting would loosen and cause fractures and leakages of the terrain/soil (which cannot be properly sealed), which would allow continuous release of unhealthy and warming gases into the environment. Even when fracking of gas shale reservoirs are completed , the loosen soil/terrain, fractures/leakages and terrain shift could further facilitate and accelerate chemical and biological reactions of such as of water, humidity, air, fossils, earth elements and bacteria to continuously produce gases. In addition, as the earth is warmed, the chemical and biological reactions could further accelerate which would further increase the amount of gases released in the environment. If fracking is carried out in many parts of the US as well as around the world, then this could added up substantially.

http://www.watershedcouncil.org/learn/hydraulic-fracturing/

* Shale gas would eventually be depleted and thus, hydraulic fracking is not a solution to sustainable clean energy and economy. It is counterproductive and harmful to continue building infrastructures and way of life that could not be maintained or sustained.

*  Set us farther back regarding renewable energy such as solar and wave/tidal, clean bio-fuel and energy efficiency. In addition, clean and renewable energy research, development and application are neglected in the process. Furthermore, it is hard to account for and irresponsible to further worsen environment pollution and destruction, endanger or threaten global biodiversity and communities well being and accelerate global warming and climate change.

      Folks:
I emailed our petition to the governor yesterday. The fate of frracking is in Bev Perdue's hands. Please email her, reach out to her, and ask her to veto this legislation. Now is the time to act. Her email is in the link below.

As you can see from the link below, we're at the second legislative hurdle to prevent fracking from going forward in our beautiful state. Can you believe that one of the laws needing to be overturned to pass this measure regulated the dumping of toxic substances underground? It actually makes sense, we had a law making that illegal, but that's the main objective of fracking!

By the way, one of the most vocal supporters and principle sponsor of this legislation is a guy called Senator Bob Rucho.

He lives near Charlotte, so what does he care if Sanford, Carthage, Pinehurst and other hamlets are polluted? Send him an email, and let him know we're not happy. Ask him if they can frack under his house first! His email address is :

Check out this article. I'm sure we'll hear next that geology is crack science. People with financial motives will not easily budge, we need more of this type of research.

Always follow the money. Check out this link. And this guy wants to be governor! That would be a blank check for Big Oil.

Thank you all for your support. This issue is critical for our state. Did you know there is language in the bill to allow these drilling companies to keep their fracking fluid ingredients secret indefinitely as long as they call it a "trade secret?" So they can pump the ground full of chemicals, and they don't have to tell the regulators what they were! And one of the best additives for releasing the gas deposits is diesel fuel! Let's not pump the ground full of diesel fuel, please. Who event thinks this stuff up?

Thank you for being the first 12 people to sign this petition. I started the petition because I am concerned with the prospect of our groundwater being contaminated by hydraulic fracking. The process literally involves pumping the ground full of chemicals known to cause disastrous problems for the human body. Have a look:
      http://www.riverreporter.com/issues/08-12-04/fracking.pdf
Many businesses rely on using chemicals in their production facilities, and this petition does not address them. However, we require through regulations that they keep a contained ecosystem to aid in disaster recovery, and require spill management systems to confine spills to impervious areas. Nature is very different. Plants and animals exist by being good at absorption.

Share this with anyone you know, and hopefully our collective voice will be heard.

A glut of a commodity means that businesses have to cut corners to be profitable. That means increased risk at our expense.

So many decisions are made on short term benefits vs long term ramifications. I am concerned about how we leave this beautiful state for our children and grand-children.

The risks of contamination of life-sustaining resources are too high for a short-term gain. Decisions made today will have a lasting effect on our children/grandchildren.
