New York Yankees: Make an "It Gets Better" video!

    1. Petition by

      Luinne Elias D'Llard

      New York, NY

It’s time for the New York Yankees to stand up against anti-gay bullying and homophobia in sports.

In an unprecedented move, the San Francisco Giants have released their own It Gets Better video, and supporters of LGBT rights from coast to coast, border to border and beyond have begun writing to their teams asking them to follow suit. (UPDATE: Just a few days ago, the Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox announced they are going to make It Gets Better videos as well!)

This petition is for all fans, home or away, of MLB's New York Yankees, imploring the Bronx Bombers to stand up for what's right, and let it ring loud and clear from Yankee Stadium across our country and around the world that "It Gets Better"!

It is wonderful to see so many Major League Baseball teams join the It Gets Better Project and reach out to our LGBT youth to tell them that it does get better. However, I have been a little confused as to why the New York Yankees have been quiet so far, especially as New York has a very large LGBT community, the LGBT movement's "big bang" occurred in New York City at Stonewall in 1969 and in particular the state legalized marriage for gay couples earlier this year. The Yankees are largely regarded as America's Team and yet is the only team with over a million Facebook fans to not have made an It Gets Better video up to this point, and I am hoping that this is an aberration and something is in the works for the Yankees to join this project. Otherwise, I believe that the Yankees organization should seriously examine this golden opportunity to do what is right and understand that its decision will echo in the halls of history.

As a lesbian mom whose 24 yr. old son goes with his dozen buddies to 5 games a season, do recognize how LGBTQ families who support the Yankees need the Yankees to be a voice against bullying and homophobia. All one needs to do is examine fan behavior to know how folks in the stands need the Yankees to deliver a powerful message.

I'm very proud that Seattle Mariners & other baseball teams did "It Gets Better" video. I'm very disappointed as a gay rights activist that New York Yankees did not make "It Get's Better" video.
