Change DWI Laws and Enforce Harsher Punishments

On Sunday, July 29, 2012, Heather Boyum was out for a training ride on her bicycle getting ready for her next triathlon event. At about 7:45am, her life was tragically taken by two drunk drivers; a motorist and a motorcyclist. Heather was a wife, mother of two young children, a teacher, a friend, a member of the Moms-In-Motion organization, and a very talented triathlete. She had touched so many lives, and was only 40 years old.

The two individuals that took her life were not first-time offenders with the law and neither of them held a valid driver's license. One of the drivers was just released from prison on parole from his third DWI charge. The laws for DWI and the punishments given to offenders need to be reviewed, along with the state regulations for parole and probation. Justice needs to be brought to Heather's family and friends, as well as those who have lost loved ones to the irresponsibility of drunk drivers. Please sign this petition in support of Heather, her friends and family, and other victims whose lives have been taken by drunk drivers.

    1. UPDATE!

Hey everyone! So we have 2,151 signatures with a few hard copies circulating the community of Rochester, NY! That is truly amazing! Although we have slowed down with signatures, we are still getting noticed! This is the slower part of the process but we will get results and the changes we are all hoping for. I have been in contact with a couple legislators and am trying to come up with some ideas for change with DWI laws. I promise to keep you all posted as I find out more! Again, I cannot thank you all enough for supporting this cause. Without these signatures, no one would have paid any attention to this. So please, continue to share and help us gain more signatures. Even though there is no set amount of signatures needed, the more we have the better chance we have of reaching our goal of positive change. Thanks again everyone!

    2. 2,133 signatures!

We now have 2,133 signatures and I am currently finding other ways to get more signatures! I have created some hard copies to be passed out around the Rochester area to get even more signatures from people who may not have access online. These signatures will be added to the petition when it is printed sent to the legislators. Don't worry, they will see them all! We are getting close to this step in sending it off to the legislators, but there is some technical work still to be done in creating our change. The goal is to create a new bill with the DWI laws. Stay tuned, there is much more to come! For now, please keep sharing this petition and getting more people to support this cause. This is how we get noticed and show how many people care about this cause. I cannot thank you all enough for what you have done thus far! Great job, keep up the great work!

    6. UPDATE!

Hey everyone! So I have been talking with a few people that have suggested we petition both the State Senate and the State Assembly. We want these DWI laws changed AND enforced. In order to do both we need to reach out to the Senate and the Assembly. So, just a minor change, but this will help us! I want to thank everyone for their support and sharing this petition. It is amazing to see so many people in the community coming together to support Heather and her family; as well as fighting for change and justice in New York. We have over 230 signatures in less than 24 hours! The support is appreciated! Please keep sharing this and asking people to support this cause. The more people we bring together, the better our chances are to win our fight!

Everyone deserves a second chance but once you have been caught driving while intoxicated a second time, you have shown you are not responsibile enough to drive a car. After a second DWI you deserve to spend a long time in prison and you should never be allowed to drive again.

I was hit head on by a drunk driver. This was not her first offense, but her third. I was lucky to walk away with minimal injuries, but things could have been much different. Why was this personal lowed to drive?
