This petition is important because during the closing of Johnnies Foodmaster and construction of Whole Foods Market Inc., there will not be a grocery store in Charlestown for over a year. Many Charlestown residents will not have access to transportation to other grocery store locations during the construction period. It is necessary to provide transportation, such as a shuttle service 3-4 times a day, to other grocery stores like Chelsea's Market Basket.

Upon the opening of Whole Foods Market Inc., many residents, such as the elderly and low income families, will not be able to afford shopping at Whole Foods Market. A shuttle to other grocery store locations is necessary while Whole Foods Market is opened for business in Charlestown.

Upon the closing of Johnnies Foodmaster, many Charlestown residents will lose their jobs. It is important to provide these former Johnnies employees with access to temporary employment during the construction of Whole Foods Market Inc. in Charlestown, Massachusetts.

I live in Charlestown and do not have a car. There is no grocery shopping within easy access on the T or bus. A food desert in Boston is not okay, and I'm considering moving after 8 years.

I have a car, so it is just an inconvenience for me, but I cannot believe that Johnnies, after years of loyal customers in this neighborhood would not have made this provision as part of the deal they made with Whole Foods - there are many elderly and handicapped people who can't drive or don't have a car, and cannot take public transportation and carry heavy bags at the same time.

There needs to be a way for residents to get food. Leaving them with nothing is not an option! Please keep in mind the elderly they derserve to be thought of.
