Open source the code for City of Heroes/Villains

For many players old and new, this game is a part of their lives. It's where friendships and made and strengthened through gameplay. Relationships are found and continue to prosper. It's more than just a game, or lines of code. This is a thriving community of close knit individuals who are facing the end of their efforts due to the withdrawal of support by NCsoft.

If the game must be shut down, then allow the players the ability to continue enjoying the game world through other means.

    2. Call to Action: Write to NCsoft

TonyV with the Titan Network (yes, the very same wonderful people trying their hardest to obtain the rights to host the game themselves with NCsoft's permission) has initiated a letter campaign to try and draw to light the 'human side' of CoH's closure. Something that a corporation tries very hard to turn a blind eye to when taking actions like this, which effects so many people on a personal level.

I encourage you to participate if possible. As I've said before every little bit helps, and given the circumstances we face; only good could come from it, if anything.

I'll be honest here. The chances of NCsoft taking this petition to heart are pretty slim to none. Especially not without a purchase of the intellectual property from NCsoft. But none of us are made of money, nor are we millionaires seeking to buy an MMO. Kickstarter is a great tool, but if rumors are to be believed, NCsoft isn't one to sell off any IP in their possession (see "Tabula Rasa", and the supposed offer of $1 million USD rejected by NCsoft). We can only hope that NCsoft deals with Titan in our favor.

But that's hardly the point here. We have a voice and we're trying to use it, because it's all we have right now. It should also be noted that we're trying to do this by legal means. You can bet that somewhere down the road someone will host a CoH private server. But will it be legal? That will depend on the outcome of this petition.

    6. More Than A Game...

This is a petition I launched in response to the announcement that NCsoft is shutting the doors on City of Heroes/Villains. An MMORPG that I've played for the past 8 years. I've created dozens of characters and devoted countless hours to this game. It's where I met my wife, and first got into internet radio broadcasting.

It's a game. A venue to provide entertainment. Lines of code to provide well rendered visuals and storylines to keep you interested...

So this is what it feels like to be told one of your best friends has a terminal disease and has only a couple months left to live. That is the closest thing I could hope to compare it with.

The article doesn't introduce much more than what's already known. But it does provide a link to NCsoft's IR (Investor Relations) Report for August 2012. It also echoes much of the sentiment we the players share regarding the game itself.

    9. RE: Other Petitions

There are so many petitions out there for NCSoft to continue to support City of Heroes/Villains. I understand why.

I acknowledge that NCSoft has committed to their choice of action.

What's needed is a more logical approach to this crisis. Yes. The game is going to be taken down before the end of this year; and there is nothing we can do about it.

So what I propose is a petition to release the game code. Making it open source. This would enable private servers hosted by former players of CoH to operate. There would be no further development on the game. But it would continue, as it is right now.

I encourage you to look this petition over, and consider whether or not you agree with it. If you do, please sign it. If not, enjoy the time we've been given to make peace with the inevitable. Because between a petition to continue their support, or a petition to open source a game they're shutting down regardless... I think it's obvious which they might seriously consider.

Be sure to get this petition out there! Through Facebook, Twitter, or even in the game itself while we still can. People need to know that it's possible; that once the servers go dark, there will still be a place to play their heroes and villains.

But only if we have enough support to make a difference.

Because this was the only MMO I've truly enjoyed, even over WoW. And to see NCsoft cut CoX just because they want you to play their generic korean crap is something I will not stand for.

I began playing this game in beta and have never stopped. My children grew up with this game as I taught them both to play at 3 years old. We have continued to play as a family, wife included, and have made many wonderful memories and achieved life-long friendships with people around the world. Please allow us to play on open-source (private) servers. This will help ensure all the work by countless programmers and players will live on until the end of the internet!

I've had this game since it came out, and it's the game I always come back to if I try other MMO's. No other MMO has ever held my attention like CoH.
