Here are the "Top Ten Reasons Why We Won't Be Watching the 2014 Sochi Olympics"

    1. Petition by

      Daniel McHugh

      Boston, MA

#10. The International Olympics Committee chose Sochi, Russia as the host city.

#9. The IOC ignored it's own Olympic Charter banning discrimination in host cities.

#8.   Russia passed an anti-gay law in June 2013 - the "Gay Propaganda Law."

#7.   The IOC refused to condemn Russia's anti-gay law or issue sanctions.

#6.   Most Olympic Corporate Sponsors refused to condemn the anti-gay law.

#5.   NBC has mostly ignored Russia's LGBT issues in it's Olympics coverage.

#4.   Russian anti-gay violence, discrimination, harassment, deportation, and deaths are increasing. Where is the NBC, Sponsor, and IOC outrage, coverage, and condemnation?

#3.  Russia has proposed a bill to remove children from families with gay parents. Where is the NBC, Sponsor, and IOC outrage, coverage, and condemnation?

#2.  Russia has banned all adoptions by single people, and countries supporting same-sex marriage, leaving couples all over the world in limbo. Where is the NBC, Sponsor, and IOC outrage, coverage, and condemnation?

#1. Even though we might otherwise watch the Olympics, this year we will not  support any company and organization that will profit from the 2014 Olympic Games. We believe you are putting money and profits before people and human rights.

Will you help me get the word out about a fundraising campaign I created to support the Russian LGBT movement? The campaign is on the Indiegogo crowdfunding site, and we offer rewards for campaign backers (designer t-shirts and other things). Contributions to the campaign go to the Russia Freedom Fund, managed by the Arcus Foundation in NYC. Please check out the campaign, make a donation to help the Russian LGBT community, and receive your rewards. The campaign weblink is http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/russian-lgbt-rights-and-equality-t-shirt/x/6309466

PS - I have a friend who spread the word about my campaign to all 1,700 people who Friended her on her Facebook page. Would you do the same? Thanks! Daniel

We're making designer T-shirts with a message of support for the LGBT community in Russia and to raise awareness about Russia's anti-gay laws, including 135-FZ. Wearing the t-shirt is a way of supporting Russian Gay Rights/Equality and keeping up the pressure for positive change.

    3. Was Coke implicated in Olympic arrest of rainbow flag-waving gay Russian?

Americablog.com. 1/18/2014 4:51pm by John Aravosis. Coca-Cola may have been implicated in the arrest earlier today of a Russian gay rights activist who was simply holding a small rainbow flag as the Olympic flame went by on the road. The 2014 Winter Olympics will be held in Sochi, Russia next month.

Pavel Lebedev was jumped by officials in official Olympic gear, later identified by the Associated Press as “Olympic security officials.”

    4. Putin: Russia must "cleanse" itself of homosexuality

      Daniel McHugh

CBS NEWS: MOSCOW, January 19, 2014, 8: 07 AM - Russian President Vladimir Putin has offered new assurances to gay athletes and fans attending the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics next month. Yet he defends Russia's anti-gay law by equating gays with pedophiles and says Russia needs to "cleanse" itself of homosexuality if it wants to increase its birth rate.

It is conspicuous that lesbian and homosexual couples worldwide were brutally persecuted, often tortured, raped and killed, incarcerated, although they are live much happier together as heterosexual couples. Threaten these happy people worldwide men with their violence against women in heterosexual couples? This is precisely the fact. Homosexual men reject sexual violence against women and are often good friends of women. Lesbian women live together in peace with their children, without threat of domestic and sexual violence. So what is so terrible to live in lesbian and homosexual couples, I think in democratic countries should it be indifferent of sexual orientation and everyone can live the way he wants, especially the women.

I will never again watch the Olympics - winter or summer! Nor will I ever again knowingly-buy something from one of the global sponsors!

Human rights have been trampled and not a word! Anything mentioned at this point is too little and waaaaaaay too late!

I have not seen any mainstream media coverage of this issues. It's more than disappointing; it's an outrage that the world cares more about a few thousand privileged athletes and corporate sponsors than it does about the lives of millions of Russian citizens. The violence and harassment cannot be ignored, by the IOC and Olympic sponsors have chosen to look the other way. They dropped the ball on this, and it reflects on everyone involved. This time, I will NOT be watching.

Government-sanctioned hate and corporate greed - it's disgusting.
