Stop airing the television show Diggers!

    1. Petition by

      Jeffrey Baker

      Las Vegas, NV

The promo (http://www.anacondatreasure.com/diggers.html) for the television show Diggers! makes it clear the people behind the television show are not concerned with truth, historical accuracy or the importance of context in understanding historic and prehistoric artifacts. This show appears to present a "Beevis and Butthead do archaeology" approach to excavating sites. This will only encourage others to engage in similar acts, including acts that may be illegal (such as the excavation of archaeological sites on public land, and the excavation of burials). National Geographic used to be a well-respected name, but, this show damages the National Geographic brand and should be canceled ASAP.

Archaeologicl heritage belongs to all cultures; the reason for preservation is the reaffirmation of the importance of humanity as a whole.

As a professional anthropologist with CRM experience, and a long-time fan of NatGeo, I am appalled that the society would support such disgraceful looting of our national heritage. I used to tell my students they could consider NatGeo a reputable scholarly source - apparently it's not any longer.

Although my PhD is in cultural anthropology (I find it easier to work with live people, and microstratigraphic work makes my knees hurt), our cultural patrimony belongs to the future, not to television shows and pot-hunter. Cut it out. NatGeo should be ashamed. I am ashamed for them, and am tweeting globally about this mistake. I look forward to your stopping this horrid show.

I am outraged that National Georgraphic would sponsor a show like this. I manage a program of volunteers who monitor and protect archaeological sites. Why not do a program that celebrates preservation of these priceless resources?

Archaeology is inherently a destructive science, yet it is a controlled and very careful one. Looting is rash and mindless destruction that is bound by none of the professional and ethical standards archaeologists are held to. What does it say about America's respect for its heritage that shows like this are being featured by popular media?
