National Geographic: Cancel 'The Incredible Dr. Pol'

This National Geographic show hurts animals and their owners by promoting substandard medicine. The state board has judged three of the four veterinarians in the featured practice guilty of incompetence and negligence. Continuing to air the show promotes substandard medicine to the public. This will result in harm to more animals and their owners because people will think this substandard care is acceptable. This is below the standards we expect from National Geographic and tarnishes the brand.

Dr. Pol has been practicing with a common sense approach to veterinary medicine for more than 40 years, saving thousands of sick and injured animals. It is unfortunate select individuals have rushed to judgment without truly understanding...

Several months ago I filed a complaint with the MIchigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs alleging specific violations of the Michigan state standards in a specific episode of the show. According to the letter I received today, the department agrees there is cause to open a formal investigation. Check for a copy of the letter on the facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/CancelDrPol.

At this link you can find an Open Letter to the Michigan Board of Veterinary Medicine asking them to take action regarding this issue http://www.justvetdata.com/an_open_letter_to_the_michigan_board_of_veterinary_medicine Please post any reaction on the blog. We can uphold the standards of veterinary medicine by getting this show off the air- and keeping anything like it from happening again.

The blog is live! Check it out at canceldrpol.org The first post contains instructions on how to file a Michigan state board complaint. Subsequent posts will dissect each of the most commonly cited incidents, starting with the Boston Terrier that had been hit by a car and had to have it's eye removed. We will cite the text of the Michigan standards and describe how the standards were violated by what is shown. Most important, though, is to counter the ignorance that National Geographic chose to promote with its' portrayal of substandard care. We can do this by providing a commentary from a group of veterinarians on how the standards could have been met- with words, pictures, videos and links to sites where we can find good information on what good care is. If as a vet, you would like to be part of that group please email me at eden@canceldrpol.org Thank you for caring about animals, their owners, and the standards of care the profession can offer.

No, actually, something really good! The webpage is coming!

An alert petition signer called the Michigan board and confirmed what the MVMA's attorney suggested in the email I received last week: anyone can submit a properly documented complaint. You do not have to be an client, a veterinarian or a resident of Michigan. The attorney's email also suggested that board complaints would perhaps be the better way to adress our concerns. National Geographic is going to have a hard time filming another season of the show without practicing vets to film!

Sooooo.... the website will have a list of specific instances that petition signers have most commonly identified as showing substandard care, with the text of which state minimum standard it is violating. There will also be links to the full text of the standards, the instructions for filing a complaint with the Michigan board of veterinary medicine and the complaint forms that can be downloaded from the web.

      Stay tuned!

We are over a thousand strong- and growing literally by the minute! We are across the country and around the world- I've lost count of the nations where people want to see good veterinary medicine offered instead of the substandard care being promoted on this show.
I started a Facebook page, come see if you 'like' it at www.facebook.com/CancelDrPol

A website is also in the works- if there's any web designers or graphic artists out there I'd love to make it possible for you to apply your talents and experience to help this cause :)
Thank you for supporting high standards in veterinary medicine- we deserve to see good medicine practiced for our animals on a national show! Please spread the word by sharing this link http://tinyurl.com/9lesdq6.

    13. 500!

      Eden Myers

There are now 500 signers and we are getting the message out! I received an email yesterday afternoon from MVMA CEO Karlene Belyea, concerned with the volume of emails her office is receiving. They consulted their attorney and on his advice,

MVMA will not consider "contacting National Geographic or getting involved in any action that could cause the show to be cancelled"

      because

"If the MVMA intervened and tried to persuade National Geographic to cancel his show, it would open itself up to a potential lawsuit for tortious interference with contractual relations, and possibly other claims."

Karlene is also concerned that petitioners may think the MVMA supports this effort.
I want to make it clear that MVMA in no way supports this petition. It was never my intent to imply that MVMA does or should in any way support this effort. Those of us who do, however- rock on! Talk about it at the office, tell your families, get your kids involved, post it as your status.

As a veterinarian I do not wish for your viewers to think the way Dr. Pol practices medicine is universal or appropriate. There are plenty of qualified veterinarians in the world I am sure you can find one that practices good medicine and is also entertaining.

Dr. Pol practices horrible medicine and, as this substandard care is broadcast to the nation, gives the entire veterinary profession a bad name.

I can't stand the way he is so rough with the animals. Also, when he castrates large farm animals, they are in absolute agony. Shame on Pol.

I am a veterinary who believes in and holds myself accountable to quality medicine. I believe The Incredible Dr. Pol is doing veterinary medicine a great disservice and skewing public perception about what is appropriate care for our pets and animals.

I believe Dr.Pol has misdiagnosed several animals on his television show and is incompetent to practice.
