The director of “Casa Hogar San Francisco de Asis,” a public shelter in Lima, Peru for children and teenagers in situations of neglect, justified the rape of a teenager living in the shelter by blaming the sexual orientation of the victim.

Corina Escobedo has reported that a 16-year-old boy, who she loves as her own son, was raped by other young people in a shelter ruled by the INABIF (National Family Welfare Program), the “Casa Hogar San Francisco de Asis.” The INABIF is a program that provides care and support for people at risk of abandonment. "The boy said that he has been raped consecutively and has received pressure to not tell anyone.”

"When she heard about these facts, the Director of the institution suggested that the boy was abused because of his ‘sexual preference.’ If the boy is homosexual, then, all those around him have to violate him,” Corina Escobedo said.

The “Dos Manzanas” LGTB web wants to join the Homosexual Movement of Lima (MHOL) requiring a clear and immediate public statement from the INABIF authorities and from the Ministry of Women, the protection of the integrity of the raped boy and an immediate investigation and punishment, removing from her functions the current Director of this Public Shelter.

"Trying to justify a violation because of the sexual orientation or gender identity of a person is terrible, because it implies that the victim is responsible for the criminal acts of others", stated the President of MHOL, Giovanny Romero. "This episode of brutal violence is part of a long chain of everyday attacks and abuses that impact the lives and bodies of lesbian, trans, gay and bisexual people.”

The sexual orientation of a person can’t be used to justify something as horrible as a rape. Join us and ask the Peruvian authorities to act now.

This director needs to be replaced and investigated. Rape is rape, no matter the sex of the offender or the sexual preference of the victim.
