Stop restricting scientists from discussing their research with the public

The scientific community relies heavily on the free flow of information. No researcher should feel undue political pressure when discussing his or her research findings. And yet, this is precisely what the Government of Canada has been doing. As detailed in the February 29 edition of the scientific journal Nature, Canadian scientists are being censored when their findings are inconsistent with the government's agenda. This has to stop.

As the late Carl Sagan put it: "The suppression of uncomfortable ideas may be common in religion or in politics, but it is not the path to knowledge, and there's no place for it in the endeavor of science."

We, the undersigned, request that the Ministry of Industry, Science and Technology allow publicly-funded scientists to speak freely about their research without political influence.

Scientist SHOULD NOT BE barred from sharing information with the broader community and SHOULD certainly NOT be muzzled by the government of the day!!!!!

The economic future of our country, and the value of our society, entirely depends on our contributions to science. These must be allowed to be freely and openly discussed with both the public and the government, or else we will stagnate.

Science depends almost entirely on the free exchange of ideas. For the sake of both progress and safety, scientific information must under (almost) all circumstances be made available publicly.

Science and politics have a different agenda.
