Minister of Forestry Zulkifli Hasan: STOP TIGER FACTORIES - PLEASE NO 'LEGAL' TIGER BREEDING FOR PETS

It is the Indonesian Ministry of Forestry's plan to allow exotic pet buyers to order a Sumatran tiger cub for Rp1 Miliar (65,000 Pounds) for which they will be allowed by the Indonesian government to have a license and legally keep the tiger as a pet.

We know that this is morally wrong, is not in the interest of conserving the remaining Sumatran Tiger habitat, and will lead to so called 'Tiger Factories'. With the massive loss of natural forest occurring every day in Sumatra (and thus loss of wild tigers), the only way that they will be able to breed them is from captive tigers, which usually leads to in-breeding and birth defects due to limited number of diverse mating adults. It is also possible that factory breeding of tigers could be made to fuel the international trade in exotic animals, and in particular tiger parts, bones and skins. The conditions that these Tiger Factories would operate under would also be highly questionable.

We ask that the Indonesian government sees sense and learns to regard the Sumatran tiger as a living creature, created by God, which wants to live in the wild, NOT a product to be marketed and sold for 'non-fiscal income' for the country. By doing so Indonesia may keep its International image as a country trying to preserve its natural environment and wildlife, NOT a country exploiting it.

These animals are NOT pets and only end up being shot when their natural instincts take over. THIS IS SO INHUMANE!
