Give Recess Back to Our Children!

In this day and age, recess is vital to our children's health, both mental and physical. It is atrocious enough that elementary school children only receive 15 minutes of recess a day; now, in a misguided effort to atone for missed school days due to the harsh winter, you, the School Board members who are supposed to advocate for our children, have decided that shortening the already-too-little amount of recess to 10 minutes is an appropriate solution. Give recess back to our children. Add another day onto the end of the year. Take away a day of Spring Break. Do not cut what little time the children already have to be carefree.

Milt Johns, Chairman
Give Recess Back to Our Children!

Sincerely,
[Your name]

They , the School Board, simply don't appear to understand children. Unfortunately, they are making the decisions regarding our children without parental input.

Recess is important for several reasons: children without recess are restless and less able to pay attention in class than children who get to stretch their legs & burn off some energy. It is also harder for children to maintain a normal body weight without recess than it is with it. Part of the work of the school day for children is the socialization which takes place on the playground. Children who are robbed of this experience lose the opportunity this presents in childhood to prepare for handling socialization in the workplace. And mind you, members of the School Board, no member who votes FOR this atrocious effort to make up for lost school days due to snow will get either my vote or the vote of my husband (this with his permission) for any office. If you can this little for the health and well-being of our children, You shouldn't be holding public office, anyway.

My daughter attends Bennett Elementary and is complaining she cannot concentrate sitting all day in the classroom without time to unwind and take a break from instructions. She is 9 years old and full of energy. She requires an outlet to release this pent up energy.
