Hello there!

Firstly, my name is Mike Smith, I am a video games journalist and I focus some of my attention on the independent genre of video games.

Over the last few years I have grown a huge appreciation for home-made videogames - I currently run a segment on a website* which devoted time to sit and chat with independent developers to give people a greater understanding of the creative process that brings us some exceptional titles.

Now, Microsoft have done a lot to help the Indie developers in the past - however since the recent** XBox Live Dashboard update it has become frustratingly difficult to find the 'Indie' genre - this affects the potential sales figures of video games which are the product of so many peoples devotion, love and hard work.

I would therefore ask anyone who cares about the independent circuit of video game development to sign this petition so that we may all ask Microsoft to change the layout of their XBox 360 Dashboard to give more exposure to the Indie games.

Thank you for your time today, and if you sign this petition, I'd love to hear from you! Please feel free to contact me: mikesmith [at] screamingjoypad [dot] com

*Please note that this petition is my own project and should not be affiliated with parties/companies/websites/magazines which I write/have written for.
**Dashboard update came into effect Fall 2011

    1. The times, they are a'changin'...

So it appears that after three months of having the Indie genre of games essentially pushed to the back of the XBox Live Marketplace, Microsoft are currently developing an update (currently for US only) which will give the Indie genre more exposure and include it in the Most Popular and New Releases.

Personally, this is not an 'update' this is a fix to a problem that was implemented last year.

So, is that it? Have we won? Well, no - not really, not yet anyway! Firstly there is no telling how much more exposure the Indie genre is going to get and secondly there has been no official word of a UK release for this 'update'

I'm not claiming that this petition had anything to do with this update being announced, however it does seem very convenient that Microsoft announced it one full week after I started this cause. More than enough time to see if this fix was possible and then begin building it, don't you think?

Anyway, keep spreading this message out there! We can do this!

    2. More Support

This petition has become more and more popular since it's creaton only a few days ago. I cannot thank people enough for signing it.

Moreso - to my surprise - The Indie Game Magazine (IGM) have hopped on board our little train to offer their support. It's such a great feeling that not only do the individuals from this illutrious team wish to place their names on this petition but they organization as a whle would like to stand by its side and say that they support it.

The Indie Games Mag recently featured our little petition on their site which you can find here:

I can only thank The Indie Games Mag for their tremendious support in this and also for being very awesome people.

It warms my heart to see so many people standing up for this cause.

I'm so thankful to everybody who has gotten behind this petition. Some of you are like me, you love the Indie games for what they are, the future of our industry, there is so much charm and love in the Indie games. Some of you are actual Indie developers who I have either worked with in the past or are just now learning my name, you have said that you may have to stop producing games for XBLIA if the layout does not change as it is too much of a risk - please, I implore you - don't do this.

I can only thank you all again from the bottom of my heart for the support you have given this cause. We're over 25% of the way there people - keep this message circulating and I'm sure we'll hit our target in no time.

Don't forget you can contact me on mikesmith [at] screamingjoypad [dot] com and I'm also on Twitter [at] slimgamer_mike

      Thank you again. Everybody.

Wow! I set this up less than 24 hours ago and gave it a slight nudge on Twitter and we've managed to reach 100 names so far. Thank you so much guys! Please, tell your friends, family, co-workers to at least give this some thought.

I've noticed that the running theme of comments seems to be "Why did you do this, Microsoft?" and that's a very good point. I mean - deep down, I like Microsoft, they invented the XBLAI genre in the first place. It just confuses me that something as integral as the future of our industry (AAA titles and companies won't be around forever but I'd bet money on there being homegrown programmers sat in their bedrooms making fun and inventive games in 20 years time) should seemingly be stashed into an unknown corner of the Live service.

I cannot say that this will make 'the' difference for this cause but doing nothing would generate a very predictable result. So thank you so much guys! Let's keep this rolling!

      - Mike

I think allowing games to have their own tab, would make things more organized and push sales. I know for a fact it wouldn't be hard to do and it would also allow advertizing "squares" for indie games. Microsoft is not allowing indie games to be a big as they could, and losing out on cash as they get a higher margin if the game is advertized on the dash.

I am an Indie Game Developer, and I think we need more recognition! We need help from Microsoft to get our games out there, and make a profit.

I like XBLA and the concept behind it, but it shoudn't be all about mainstream causal gaming. XBLA will benefit from indie games while it inspire customers to play new gaming formats, like Valve's Steam. I also like to see more XBLA indie games be available in Europe.

I'm horrified at the grossly underlooked XBLIGames around. Little Racer Street is a prime example. These gems hidden away in the dash are more fun than billion dollar backed so called 'AAA' games. About time it was given the recognition it deserves.
