Stop national retailers opening in the East Village

    1. Petition by

      Henry June

Zip code 10003, which we all know as the East Village, now has the most national retail stores of any zip code in nyc (except for one that has a huge shopping mall). This means Subway instead of CBGB, 7-Eleven instead of your friendly neighborhood bodega, Starbucks galore, and more banks that any human possibly needs.

It's time to stop the madness. It is time to say no to giant corporations and to gentrification. It is time to save whatever is left of this neighborhood's character.

Commenters point out that 10009 should be added as it's part of the EV, but it has in fact one of the lowest numbers of national retailers of any zip code in town. Maybe one goal should be to try and keep it that way?

While according to the times, 10003 is only the third, not the second, in terms of national retailers (actually there are two huge shopping mall zip codes, not just one as I thought), it makes a very good point - side by side, EV outlets of national chains would occupy 16 city blocks!

The mayor has an obligation to put the welfare and the interests of the citizens of this city ahead of the interests of and real estate holders based in other states, who are draining our city of resources in exchange for minimum wage jobs. There are places in the city where these businesses belong, but it's not in the unique neighborhoods that make up the character of the city.

The great appeal of the East Village is its long history of family-owned and -operated businesses. An influx of chain stores and major corporate outposts will serve only to destroy the unique and timeless creative passion of this neighborhood.
