Melaka Zoo: Stop Abuse on Sumatran Orangutan

    1. Friends of the Orangutans

      Malaysia, Malaysia

Melaka Zoo, 2 hours south of capital Kuala Lumpur is now infamous for their treatment of orangutans.

The picture of this petition is of a beautiful male Sumatran orangutan, who has been locked up in his barren cage for at least 12 months now. Absolutely cruel and heartless, and this is condoned by the Malaysian wildlife authorities, Perhilitan!

No one knows if he ever gets a chance to go out in the boring enclosure in front, to breathe fresh air, to feel rain on his back, to feel freedom from the hell he is going through day in, day out. This poor orangutan is now showing signs of mental illness. Check out a video of his condition here:

Other orangutans have also suffered at the hands of irresponsible management at this zoo, and last year the misery of Melaka Zoo orangutans was highlighted by newspapers in the UK, including the Daily Mirror, here:

Please will you sign this petition and share it on your Facebook and Twitter wall? YOUR help is needed to stop the abuse of orangutans at Melaka Zoo. Thank you very much.

Below is letter by founder of Friends of the Orangutans on Melaka Zoo orangutans. Melaka Zoo still won't announce they are willing to improve the enclosure and night cages of orangutans there. There is also no news the Sumatran orangutan will be helped. Please share this petition on your Facebook/Twitter as we need more signatures. Thank you for helping!

What enrichment programme does Melaka Zoo have for orangutans?

Many are wondering what enrichment programme Melaka Zoo is running to keep the orangutans occupied (‘Zoo: Orang utans allowed to roam’, NST, May 29, 2012). There is nothing much for orangutans to do in the outdoor exhibit, enrichment is cheap to provide and an essential requirement for all zoo species. Telling from pictures people around the world have seen, the orangutans’ night cages have very little or zero enrichment.

Even after being revealed, Melaka Zoo refuses to accept criticism and make improvements for orangutans. Read the press release and please bear in mind what you read is a stark difference from what is really happening at Melaka Zoo. Look at these pictures below, pictures don't lie:

    5. Orangutan suffering caught on video

Please take a look at the video below, this is not normal orangutan behaviour. This poor orangutan has been locked up in Melaka Zoo in Malaysia this way for an awful long time now. As you can tell from watching the video, this orangutan needs help ASAP.

Please save this orangutan from a life of torment. Spread the word, pass this petition around. Please post in your Facebook, Twitter, blog, website, etc.

Thank you for all you do! This orangutan is relying only on US to change his fate!

No living creature should suffer unnecessarily at the hands of humans. It is not necessary to treat these intelligent primates in this way. The abuse must stop immediately.
