Fully Fund the Expansion and Renovation of Hearst Elementary School!

    1. Petition by

      Jennifer Leonard

      Washington, DC

The renovation and expansion of Hearst Elementary must be fully funded in order to meet the needs of our 21st century learners. The current level of allocated funding is deficient and does not meet critical needs.

Hearst Elementary's 20th century facilities aren't keeping up with its 21st century students, who represent every city Ward; the historic school building presents myriad learning limitations and safety risks. Hearst's full renovation and expansion will enhance learning opportunities by upgrading classrooms, creating thriving community and learning spaces, and enhance safety and accessibility.

The historic facility lacks basic fundamentals: a gym, cafeteria, administrative space, central meeting space, and secure entry. This means limited exercise, kids eating cold meals at desks, extremely limited space for community engagement, clumsy and inefficient administrative space, and challenges properly securing the building for our kids' safety. The school also houses an autism program, but there is no space for physical therapy. Right now, grades 3-5 are housed in trailers on school property - most lack restrooms and running water.

With Hearst students coming from all DC Wards, supporting the Hearst community means supporting the entire city.

Hearst can't just make do. Hearst must make GREAT. Please fully fund the expansion. ALL of DC SHALL BENEFIT!

I have a child in 3rd grade and another child who went through from pre-K to 5th grade. Hearst is a great school that is expanding. Although the teachers continue to do great things with limited resources, they and the children deserve the school and resources promised to them. All schools in the District should continue to go through their renovations as previously agreed upon. The city has weathered the downturn pretty well and will continue to do so. The money should be there.

Have young relatives who would benefit from the totally complete education they would receive with the renovation.

DC is a school in my neighborhood, and one to which I'd like to apply for per-K for my son. It has a great teaching reputation but a terrible facility. That should change!

Safety is the number one concern.
