STOP the BAN on Food Donations to Homeless Shelters in NYC

I’m a filmmaker currently directing documentary “Homeless in a College Town.” Myself and our team of assistants at Counterfeit Cow Productions have been working for many months to raise awareness of the crisis of homelessness, and giving those homeless individuals a voice.
So when I read that Mayor Michael Bloomberg has put a ban on food donations to the homeless shelters in NYC… I WAS OUTRAGED!

According to an article published by CBS News, Mayor Bloomberg has outlawed food donations to homeless shelters in NYC because he says “the city can’t asses their salt, fat and fiber content.” AND about homeless shelters collecting food donations Bloomberg said “If they did in the past they shouldn’t have done it and we shouldn’t have accepted it,”.
(Read more at: ).

Even though most food donations are fruits, vegetables, breads, and the like... coming from small business owners who can most likely provide that information if the city can't come up with that themselves. AND don't forget that restaurant owners have Servsafe Certifications CAUSE THEY ALREADY SERVE THE PUBLIC!

Seriously? Have you not walked down the streets of your own city Mayor Bloomberg? Are you just another politician essentially saying “Let them eat cake!”

Is it better that the homeless dive in dumpsters for food and potentially get illnesses that way???

Shame on you Mayor Bloomberg, and everyone who supports this nonsense!

This ban has taken effect in March! And they have been able to keep this out of the public knowledge until NOW!

What you are doing Mayor Bloomberg is teaching people that it is OK TO TURN YOUR BACKS ON THESE PEOPLE! You’re telling them DON’T HELP!

Mayor Bloomberg, our nation is judged WORLD WIDE by how well we take care of others who cannot take care of themselves. NYC sets the example for the nation!

And what you are doing goes against EVERYTHING that we (at Counterfeit Cow Productions), and agencies who work with the homeless are trying to do!!! There are so many homeless individuals that survive solely on the donations of others. AND it is difficult enough to encourage people to help, and bring awareness to homelessness without a "law" discouraging citizens’ participation!!!!

According to… Sadly, this is starting a trend in other cities!!! Feeding the homeless is now being banned in major cities all over America. Other cities that have not banned it outright have put so many requirements on those that want to feed the homeless.

National Coalition for the Homeless has reported that, due to the recent foreclosures crisis in the United States, homelessness has been on the rise.

According to HUD’s July 2010 Homeless Assessment Report to Congress: more than 1.59 million United States Citizens spent at least one night in an emergency shelter or transitional housing program in ONE YEAR!

DID YOU KNOW that the average mortality rate of a homeless individual is 47 years of age??

Many Homeless people in this country have health issues from living in the elements for so many years. NOT BECAUSE OF THE FOOD THEY EAT! Dealing with malnutrition due to lack of food is a reality for large percentage of the United States Population!

Is this the fate you foresee for us Mayor Bloomberg?

By signing this petition you will be taking a stand with us saying: “Mayor Bloomberg, STOP THIS BAN! Don’t discourage us from helping our neighbors, brothers and sisters, and children in need.”

You clearly don’t know what it’s like to struggle, and be down-and-out in the trenches Mayor Bloomberg!

Because in my life I've been hungry...not in a long time, but I can still remember what that was like. No one should go hungry in our country...EVER!!

This is an embarrassment to the entire country. I can hardly think of a better way to convince the rest of the world (those few who have not made up their minds already) that the U.S. is a nation of self-centered idiots.

The last thing the homeless and NYers need is to be micro managed. I'm a native New Yorker who now lives in Seattle and I was once homeless as a teen.
