We believe Steelers Nation deserves to be able to properly send Hines Ward off into football retirement in style, the Steelers way. Loud and proud, the fans wearing the number 86 jersey in honor of Hines’ 14 years of incredible loyalty and play for The Pittsburgh Steelers. We would like to therefore propose that the first home game of the season, September 16, 2012 should be proclaimed “Hines Ward Day” in the City of Pittsburgh and at Heinz Field. A celebration of Hines Ward’s career in Pittsburgh.

Not only is Hines Ward one of the greatest wide receivers ever, and not just of the Steelers, he created a whole new role for the wide receiver, and is known for his tackles as much as his receptions. He earned three team MVP awards, was sent to four consecutive Pro Bowls and holds two Super Bowl rings. He was also named the MVP for Super Bowl 40. Hines Ward holds the Pittsburgh Steelers all-time records for receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns, and is one of only eight receivers in NFL history to reach 1,000 career receptions. And let’s not forget the 12,000 yards.

Off the field, Hines Ward is such a contributor to the city of Pittsburgh, Atlanta and the world for his charitable work with his Helping Hands Foundation, and with the Hines Ward Helping Hands Korea Foundation, Pearl S. Buck International, The Caring Foundation, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Salvation Army, Make a Wish Foundation, Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and Take a Player to School. The list goes on and on. And Hines has already clearly stated he will continue to come back to Pittsburgh and do humanitarian work. And he already has since his retirement.

He made us smile again after our last devastating loss in the Super Bowl by bringing home the Mirror Ball trophy, and we celebrated with him at a rally. Let us celebrate his gloried history with the Steelers and as part of Steelers Nation. Give Steelers Nation the chance to properly say “Thank You” to Hines for all that he has done for us, the fans, and for the City of Pittsburgh. Let us show him how proud we are that he will remain a Steeler 4 Life. Give US the chance to be able to show our pride in having Hines Ward to cheer on for 14 years, and to properly send him off. We need this opportunity to wear our 86 jerseys in honor of Hines Ward. We want our chance to be able to say goodbye and see him on Heinz Field one more time.

Because Hines has exemplified everything good about Steeler Football for more than a decade. It would give the fans a real opportunity to say thank you publicly. Please decide soon as I plan to travel home to Pittsburgh for this one! GO STEELERS!!!!!
