Fight Back for 5 Points

    1. Petition by

      Eric Heineman

      Charlotte, NC

Due to recent events of violence and crime in the downtown area of Columbia, we as current and former students of area colleges and universities and residents of Columbia are attempting to join together to get back the 5 Points area we once knew and felt safe in.

The safety of students from colleges and universities throughout Columbia and all visitors to the 5 Points district is at stake. The success of bars and restaurants throughout 5 Points is endangered by unwarranted crime which has the potential to deter patrons from what has historically been a safe place to gather with friends.

I grew up in Shandon and the shops and businesses of Five Points have always been a part of my life.

I am a student at USC and even though I do go to 5 points I do not feel safe. The cops just stand outside of the bars waiting for underage students to come out instead of dealing with the actual crime that is taking place

The heavy police force is ineffective when focusing on underage drinking, public drunk, and even jaywalking to show numbers instead of addressing the real problems. Last spring semester my friend was arrested for standing beside a fight and was confused to be involved while in jail he was accompanied by 13 others who were jailed simply for jaywalking. This was on a Thursday night after one of the first of 2 weekends containing multiple shooting, the next Friday night the police bragged proudly of arresting 57 people that Thursday night, 14 of which we know were completely innocent.

My daughter attends the University and the cops only focus on underage drinking rather than DUI and all the gangs and shootings and breakins and rapes.
