Massachusetts Representatives: Please Stop Painful Electric Shocks on Students at JRC in Massachusetts!

    1. Gregory Miller
    2. Petition by

      Gregory Miller

      Berry Creek, CA

Hi, my name is Gregory Miller. I used to work at a school in Massachusetts named The Judge Rotenberg Center (JRC) where we used powerfully painful electric shock devices (45 – 91 milliamps, at 66 volts) on students to control their behaviors. These devices are much stronger than police stun guns (1-4 milliamps). Unlike stun guns, the electrodes most commonly used at school are spaced 3 – 4 inches apart so that the electrical volts passing through the flesh create the maximum amount of pain with those amps and volts. The United Nations is aware of JRC, has called these shocks at JRC “torture”, and says that “The prohibition of torture is absolute.” Please see the attached video of a student named Andre getting shocked at JRC, covered by Fox News.

Rather than shocking students for only severe behaviors, JRC also shocks students for minor behaviors, such as closing eyes for 15 seconds while sitting at the desk, pulling apart a loose piece of thread, tearing an empty used paper cup, going to the bathroom in one’s clothes after signing that they need to use the bathroom for over two hours, standing up and raising a hand to ask to go to the bathroom, blowing small bubbles in saliva between one’s lips, and shocking a non-verbal nearly blind girl with cerebral palsy for making a moaning sound and for attempts to hold a staff’s hand (her attempts to communicate and to be loved).

I would greatly appreciate your help to protect my former students by petitioning Massachusetts legislators to make these shock procedures illegal. These students are among Massachusetts’ most vulnerable citizens and have no voice of their own to describe their pain. They need YOUR voice!

Whether you are an American, or are from elsewhere within the United Nations, I urge you to please CLICK on the Petition Letter tab to carefully read the petition that is based on what I have personally witnessed at JRC, and sign the petition.  Then please invite as many friends as you can through www.Change.Org, email, Facebook, Twitter, and elsewhere, to sign this petition.  Please value these student lives enough to let Massachusetts know that Americans do not condone shock procedures in this country. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Gregory Miller

    1. Mother Seeks Ban on Shock Therapy Treatment That She Calls “Torture”

      Gregory Miller
      Petition Organizer

Describing some of the methods used at the Judge Rotenberg Center like “something out of Clockwork Orange,” former teacher’s assistant Gregory Miller got ready to deliver over 260,000 signatures to state officials on Beacon Hill to push for a ban on electro-shock treatments at the behavioral school.

“This is sick. Absolutely sick. I am embarrassed that I used to work there,” said Miller, standing outside the State House with Cheryl McCollins, whose son had experienced the shock therapy.

With photos of some of McCollins’ son Andre’s injuries, and recording sheets showing why the school felt it necessary to administer shocks, Miller said Andre was allegedly shocked repeatedly for tensing up his muscles during the treatment—an “unnecessary” amount for a reaction anyone would have when being subjected to the pulses from the machine.

“They are using an excuse to shock students while they are already getting shocks,” said Miller. “They are [already] in a total state of helplessness.”

Thank you for all who have signed this petition that is written directly to the lawmakers who legalize electric shocks on students in Massachusetts. Please see my new petition that is written directly to the Judge Rotenberg Center, with copies to individuals in the Massachusetts legislature.

Many people wrote me from overseas saying that they have had technical difficulty signing this current petition. Please see my new petition that is much easier for people around the world to sign, and which gives valuable additional information about JRC. Both petitions are important, one to JRC and this current petition to the Massachusetts legislature, so please sign both petitions. Thank you!

Thanks to your effort, we now are beginning to receive some valuable help and public attention towards ending the shock procedures on my former students.

Thank you for your support of this petition. Your efforts are paying off. All I can say for now is that some big developments are happening that would not be possible without your support. You will soon hear more.

    7. Reached 250 signatures
    8. Now at 234 signatures within 48 hrs to stop painful shocks in Massachusetts

We are off to a good start. If everyone who signs the petition finds within 24 hours of signing an additional two or more friends who care about these students enough to sign, we will have one million signatures within two weeks. That only happens with your effort. This is a United Nations human rights issue, so people from all countries are invited to sign the petition.

So I appeal to you: If you stand with the United Nations in prohibiting what the UN calls “torture” on students in Massachusetts, please make this your own petition. Now people can see it for themselves for the first time ever outside of JRC’s walls. Please write your friends and tell them not only the negative about what is happening in Massachusetts, but also tell them the positive, that there is something that they can do. It takes only a minute to sign the petition, and it takes only a couple more minutes to email the link to a few friends or to share it on Facebook. Thank you! – Greg Miller

    9. Reached 100 signatures
    10. Thanks! On our way to helping these students. 27 signed in first 24 hrs!

      Gregory Miller
      Petition Organizer

If everyone who signs the petition helps an additional two friends to sign the petition within 24 hours, we can reach the target of 1,000,000 petitions within 14 more days! Please, ask your friends to read the petition. Every single time someone signs, it sends a message to 20 politicians who are directly involved in making the laws that keep electric shocks legal. We have the facts put together, and people can see for themselves on video what the shocks look like. So please, email the petition link to your friends. Share the link on Facebook. Go the extra mile. Encourage each friend to please invite two additional friends within 24 hours. They may have never heard of the Judge Rotenberg Center, or never thought it possible in America that students could be shocked as we now can clearly see outside of JRC's walls. This is our opportunity to really do something about it. I thank you for DOING something for the love of these students!-GM

My little sister has cerebral palsy and I could never imagine allowing someone to exercise such activities and tortures upon her. I hope that the parents and guardians of these children, as well as the staff of JRC are prosecuted for violating basic human rights.

I am signing to stop the electroshock treatments at Judge Rotenberg Center. These children are not Pavlov's dogs to be used in some sort of torturous conditioning experiment. Not even Penn Hurst in Pennsylvania which was closed by court order used this type of treatment! In my opinion the actions of JRC are criminal.
