Gymnastics, a time-honored sport in the state of Massachusetts for over half a century, acts as an outlet for many young and energetic athletes. The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) revoked Men's Gymnastics state recognized varsity status recently. The MIAA based their decision on the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) announcement that they will no longer write national rules for high school gymnastics.

But why must new rules be written each year?

Athletes, coaches, and friends of the sport are hereby banding together and petitioning the MIAA's decision.

Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA), 33 Forge Parkway Franklin, MA 02038
Restore Massachusetts Men's Gymnastics to Varsity Status

Sincerely,

      MIAA official regrets remark

A spokesman for the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association is apologizing for calling gymnastics "a girls' sport" - a remark that drew sharp criticism from many area gymnasts, including Olympic champion Aly Raisman. Paul Wetzel made the "girls' sport" comment to the Globe on the heels of the MIAA's decision to stop recognizing boys' gymnastics as an official high school sport.

I am a former gymnast and understand how important it is to keep the sport alive and support the young men who give up so much for the sport.

My daughter only does gymnastics because her older brother does it and loves it. She wishes she could do the rings and the pommel horse. Who says it is a girls' sport???

I competed on the Burlington High School Men's Gymnastics team. Gymnastics gave me the work ethic and skills to continue on to other sports like wrestling, Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai boxing.

Paul Wetzel may be right about one thing...Gymnastics is not a boys sport...it's a mans sport.
