Keep Facebook Family Friendly: Stop Allowing Sex Ads & Pornographic Content

Social media outlet Facebook promotes itself as a family friendly environment. The minimum age requirement for an account is 13, and there is a multitude of minors as accountholders. Unfortunately, despite their advertisement, there is an alarming incidence of blatant and very easy to find contradictions to this standard.

Section 3.7 of Facebook’s policy says, "You will not post content that: is hate speech, threatening, or pornographic; incites violence; or contains nudity or graphic or gratuitous violence."

Section 3.10 says, "You will not use Facebook to do anything unlawful, misleading, malicious, or discriminatory."

However, Facebook continuously hosts several pages promoting pornographic imagery, nudity, the sale of women’s bodies for sex, and derogatory language towards women, all of which clearly violate Section 3.7, as well as Section 3.10 in its maliciousness. (See below for examples.)

If that isn’t enough, some of these pages are even sponsored by Facebook as they show up in the advertisement section on the right hand side of unwilling users’ home pages (e.g., ‘The Stepford Wives’ escort service), as well as any one of them being very easy to come across unwillingly through certain keyword search results, and being accessible to minors at any time.

And to top it all off, Facebook also hosts pages such as ‘Jail Bait’ and ‘Smash or Pass’ that clearly promote illicit sexual behaviour revolving around and directly engaging minors, and child pornography which takes the unacceptability of this issue to an entirely new level with the abhorrent, unlawful promotion and encouragement of minors engaging in derogatory sexual acts and child pornography. In the very least, this clearly violates Section 3.10 in its malicious nature towards minors because of the emphasis on illicit and derogatory nature revolving around sexual behavior among and towards minors.

Unfortunately, in replies to various accountholders reporting these pages with illicit content, Facebook has stated that these pages do not violate their policies (most recently during the week of the 6th of August 2012, the week of the formation of this petition).

Facebook is arguably the premiere social networking outlet in the world, and in having become a societal leader, its leaders find themselves in a completely different arena than their beginnings. So its leaders must understand the importance of lacking integrity towards their policies, as well as the harmful effect of their image as a self-promoted family friendly environment. They have to take into account the whole of society and their social responsibilities, recognizing their impact beyond their platform's direct environment, and refusing to cater to the interests of a minority of people seeking sexist and pornographic pleasure. There are already too many other factors that are already reinforcing and feeding the pornification of our society, as well as the sex trafficking industry and child exploitation through the internet.

So we are petitioning Facebook and its key shareholders: they must act now to bring this accountability to the department of their company that controls what is approved and disapproved content on their site. We believe that Facebook knows the importance of keeping a reputation of integrity and decency for its mass spectrum of users, which will carry it far more for years to come than allowing explicit and degrading content. And we expect nothing less than this integrity, decency and regard for all from such a prominent public establishment in our society. So we need Facebook to own up to the standards of its policies and live up to the integrity of a highly respected worldwide entity, so it can live out the longevity of a trusted, outstanding corporation well beyond the generation of its founding leaders.

We are now partnering with and will combine both petitions and signatures to reach facebook and key shareholders together:

Important documentary exposing this atrocity:

Examples of unacceptable pages, all of which have been reported to Facebook by multiple users, yet still remain (here only for the purpose of evidence, not viewing, as these pages have very graphic content):!/pages/The-Stepford-Wives/323845194364125 - pornographic including nudity and women for sale - pornographic full nudity with derogatory language about women - pornographic with derogatory language about women, and clearly discloses an email address (THESMUTTS2@AIM.COM) for followers to keep track of their new pages, as they frequently “close and start new pages before they get busted” (in their words)!/SXY.GIRLZ - pornographic full nudity - pornographic partial nudity!/pages/Naked-Selfies/336580676432822 - pornographic including nudity with derogatory language about women – frequently close and start new pages via instagram messages - pornographic including nudity with derogatory language about women - explicit underage partial nudity with derogatory language about girls - explicit underage partial nudity with derogatory language about girls!/pages/Smash-Or-PASS-Teens-Only/149983261738468 - degrading underage with derogatory language about women and girls - advocating paedophilia

Explotation of women as something to be consumed needs to stop. Selling sex is wrong in all platforms. Women are not objects and our culture must stand to change this veiw of women.
