When you think of a good councilman, it should be someone that loves all of his people, respects all of his people, and will care for all of his people. This is not the case with Marion Barry, former Mayor of Washington, D.C., and current City Councilman. At an April 3rd primary victory party celebrating his nomination to serve as representative of Ward 8 in D.C., Barry said:
"We’ve got to do something about these Asians coming in, opening up businesses, those dirty shops. They ought to go. I’ll just say that right now, you know. But we need African American businesspeople to be able to take their places, too."
Once news organizations confronted him, he refused to back down, blaming the interpretation and expressing no regrets. As the Washington Post's editorial board stated, these remarks are "too outrageous to ignore" and "stirring up racial hatred should never get a pass."
Marion Barry is a racist, and our society does not need an openly racist Councilman representing any district, and certainly not one in our nation's Capitol. Marion Barry's statement was spoken out of obvious deep contempt toward Asian Americans in the community he represents.
For these reasons, we demand for Marion Barry to resign immediately. We call upon all Americans -- and particularly Asian Americans -- to sign this petition and let Marion Barry know that his ugly and hateful speech is not acceptable. Our country and communities need true leaders who can respect other people regardless of their race and ethnicity, and certainly don't need ones who call for the ethnic cleansing of businesses in their district.
Please join our campaign to demand Marion Barry to resign. Let this be the final straw: being a minority or an immigrant should not be license to be treated like second-class citizen.
