We the undersigned wish to express our outrage at what we consider a systemic pattern of unjustly lenient sentences for crimes against women and children. This leniency is a miscarriage of justice and must stop immediately.
On July 20Th of this year a 24 year old adult male who reportedly abducted a 14 yr old girl from a grocery store parking lot in May 2011 and was accused of sexually assaulting her before letting her go in front of a school. Was permitted by prosecutors to enter a plea bargain whereas he received only three years of supervised probation and six months of deferred jail time. Witnesses wrote down the car's license plate and that led to his arrest .The girl identified him as her attacker out of a police lineup.
In June of this year a cardiologist who was accused of sexually abusing 19 of his female patients, was permitted by prosecutors to enter a plea bargain that will prevent him from having to register as a sex offender. At least 19 women came forward to accuse him of 61 counts of sexual abuse. Despite the outcry and protests of local victims’ rights groups, this predator was sentenced to very minimal jail time and NOT required to register as a sex offender.
It is a known fact that the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office has botched hundreds of sex crime investigations dating back as far as 2005. Many of these offenses involved child molestation and rape. Most of The offenders are still walking the streets where they have access to other victims.
We are calling on you as an elected official to ensure that ALL perpetrators of sex crimes are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, regardless of the perpetrator or victims socioeconomic status. We refuse to stand by idly while this County becomes a safe haven for sexual predators.
