Because of the Citizens United decision, more money will be involved in our elections than ever before. Unregulated, untracked, and unaccounted-for money will flood our airwaves, often with lies, smears, and unfounded attacks.
We need Congress to pass legislation to deal with this issue, but that could take a while. In the meantime, there's something that can happen right now which could blunt the negative effect of all this unregulated cash. We can get media companies to refuse to accept any advertising money from SuperPACs.
The simple fact is that a lot of the SuperPAC money will go towards TV ads. These ads are likely to distort the truth, lower the level of discourse, and could have serious negative impacts on our democracy. But if all the TV and radio stations refuse to accept SuperPAC money, the effect of the SuperPACs can be limited. They won't be able to blanket our airwaves with negative ads.
There's a lot of chatter in the media about the impact of SuperPACs and about the amount of negative advertising. They have the power to do something about it. Join me in asking them to stop accepting ads funded by SuperPACs, and let's return a bit of accountability and oversight to political spending.
