Abandon plans to build a truck stop at exit 24 on I–81 in Meadowview, VA.

The proposed truck stop, which is less than 1000 ft. from the Meadowview Elementary School, endangers the health and safety of our children. No other public school in the U.S. is closer than this to a truck stop. The truck stop will have a devastating effect on the health of the school children. Pollution from diesel and gasoline exhausts is known to contain carcinogens and to greatly increase the risk of respiratory disorders, particularly asthma. The school is downwind from the proposed truck stop, and the inversion effect, common in and around the school, will hold the pollutants close to the land surface. There will be increased noise pollution and, at night, light pollution, and there is always the danger of a toxic spill. In addition, traffic to and from the school will substantially increase, and congestion will lead to more accidents. Prostitutes, predators, and other unseemly characters often find a haven at truck stops, and we do not want these people in close proximity to the elementary school children.

I went to Meadowview Elem. and own land nearby; plan to retire to Washington County. This is a bad project that will be dangerous for kids. If approved, the board needs to be ready for some costly litigation because of a lack of due diligence. That will cost taxpayers in Washington Co.

I want to buy a house in the area and send my children to Meadowview Elementary, but I won't if we act with such blatant disregard to overwhelming evidence that this is an unsafe location for a truck stop. Purposefully build a truck stop right next to an elementary school? Why?

If Washington County wants to keep an elementary school at this location, it needs to protect it and take proper care of it. My son is, by law, mandated to attend this school. He doesn't have the choice to "go to another exit", as truckers do. Please show at least as much respect for our own children as you do for business people passing through our area

the fact that the proposed truck stop does not meet VDOT regulations should be a red flag that it does not belong in this location, otherwise why would there be a regulation.
